10/28: NYI Fan Central Q & A

New York Islander Fan Central | 10/28/2007 08:09:00 PM

I thought today would be a good time for a little Q & A to answer some questions that I have been getting in my e-mail recently about the blog and I will continue to do it from time to time.

Q: How come the weekly prospect updates are not included here?

A: I like the Islander weekly prospect updates, but we have someone named Mr Prospects on the message board doing it on a game by game basis for us already and his work is ahead of the Islander updates and the quality is outstanding. The blog itself has a link to the prospect profiles on the Islander website and the link to the Islanders website here gives that weekly update anyway because of the feeder.

Q: Will you be doing player interviews?

A: No, as I explained I think that's for the younger fans who would like a career in reporting and is not a skill that goes to my strengths.

Q: Have I sold out to the Islanders website?

A: I'm not really sure what this means but as I wrote this week nothing is going to change in terms of the content here. There will be times I am very critical of the organization and times when they are praised for things they try to do. Not providing an outlet for the fans to send Jason Blake their best wishes was something I was very critical of recently because this was done for other players in the past.

All I can promise is I will be fair and most of my commentary on the club will come down to how much they win or lose and how they play.

Q: You miss some writers and publications in your tags.

A: Unfortunately there is a two hundred character limit for tags so in a longer update there is no space but I always credit the publication on the page somewhere. My rule to this point has been to make sure the writer gets credit first, then the publication they write for in the tags.

Q: Do I want personal publicity for myself?

A: Absolutely not. I specifically asked my blog quietly be added to the box with no announcement. I offered my blog because only because I thought it could help the organization. I would never accept any personal recognition because the New York Islanders are the story here and what we as fans can quietly do for them. Anyone who does otherwise to self promote themselves is not in it for the Islanders and we could do without those kind of fans.

I'm going to wind this up by giving my brother's question a plug here because he's always reading my old board at Hockey's Future and played a little joke on me.

Yes, this is payback for sending me this junk bro, everyone gets to read my answer to you.

Q: What's going on, I looked at HF board and saw Nyisles as moderator on the Islander board again? Why would you agree to do that?

A: I have no idea what you are talking about. Someone named Nyisles was named moderator on the old board? Is that moderator number four or five now that has been there in the year I have been gone because it sure is not me but that's a heck of a coincidence.

Oh well, hopefully Killer Carlson's jokes let up long enough so anyone can get in a hockey comment once in a while. Good luck to the next Nyisles at Hockey Future, I'm expecting my royalty check from the sequel.

I was told in the comment section my harmless joke was offensive to the person it was written about. I'm very sorry if this was taken the wrong way because it was not my intention. Please visit the comment section (below) for what I have to say about this and HF in detail. Thank You.

  1. Great blog.

Someone e-mail you and asked if you are doing this for personal publicity?

That comment on nyisles was very funny. The guy is actually upset you wrote it and flamed you.

    Someone else insulted you too.

  2. How come all the good things I write about HF and all the times I
thanked everyone are NEVER posted there for some strange reason?

Tell me your kidding? This person thinks I was insulting him? YIKES !!!!!

I thought the sequel comment was very funny and it sure was not meant to be an insult toward a total stranger. I'm sorry if he took it the wrong way. I wished him good luck. Did he read that part or just skip over it?

I hope this nyisles lasts as long as I did as moderator. He will likely not moderate a board with Mike Milbury as gm almost entirely alone for five years. I hope he understands he joined that board because of a lot of good core posters who were there from the beginning, myself included. All of us did our part to make it popular.

I'm proud to have been a part of that place and represented our board as moderator. I gave all I had to put up a quality product not only as a writer and a mod but as a poster.

I thanked the HF members in my blog bio for the Islanders website and talked about the great members we had who got us through a lockout. That's more praise and recognition then HF has ever received from the New York Islanders on any public website.

I wanted to let whoever is left there know how much I appreciated all we did together and how they helped make me a better hockey fan. It was my little tribute to them and those from the mailing list.

I bet that will also NEVER appear on that website either even though it was on my blog the first week I started it back in July.

I will tell you this. If I had just been a poster there I would have loved to read Jerry's jokes.

As moderator I was laughing my head off at some of his stuff because it was very funny. Same with Joe's Geico Caveman.

Having written that I personally asked for help and everyone else several times before I started holding every member accountable for the rules they agreed to when they signed up.

I told everyone I could in public and private I was getting e-mails many hated the board with all the ruined threads and were leaving because the losses were not as bad as the constant complaining before during and after games. A few old timers left and it really bothered me because they liked that board a lot. I felt I let them down and they told me I was fighting an impossible task to turn things around to get more hockey discussion back for everyone.

Many understood when I asked for help, many others did not care. I refused to play favorites regardless, that's what mods have to do and it's never easy.

I have received far more than my share of praise and thanks from a lot of people at HF. Once again all I can do is tell them how much I appreciate it. I wish nothing but the best for the Islander board and the posters over there.

Nyisles new HF moderator, this goes for you too. If you do this long enough you may understand someday what I'm talking about here. I again wish you the best of luck with something that I will always consider special.

  3. Thought maybe you'd want to address the below comments on you "Islanders hockey" blog.

Referring to words a former mod here used on his blog to explain his actions here, his opinions of others....and trying to recreate the scenario of his dismissal, which has huge gaps of information.

The whole thing is water under the bridge now.

The moral of the story is: A messageboard is the sum of it members, not the vision and opinion of a moderator. Nor is it to be subjugated to someone's issues of control. Moderators moderate, thus the term of the actual word: moderation. Not try to curtail and alter conversation. Hopefully he is happier in doing what he does now. We have a great Isles messageboard here, with excellent mods and a camaraderie that was not present years ago.

Back to the subject-at-hand: nyisles, congrats. Another great HFboards guy!

  4. Anonymous,

I know who wrote it because the same person was kind enough to reach out to me twice and was nothing but a class act who I thanked.

Everyone's enitled to an opinion, I just had mine (above) and told the folks at HF what I think of the board and the posters.

If you feel I slighted you, I'm very sorry.

  5. Why don't you just post what you have to on HF? Who knows if your apology ever makes it to nyisles?

  6. I'm not a member of hockey's future any longer and have no interest in returning. If that person can read my original comments here he can read this too.

I don't know if you remember me? I used to be Makela at HF and thought you ran the best board over there.

Those people at the Islander board stink and should be ashamed of themselves and should take a good long look in the mirror. What did any of them do to help that board but complain. I remember you asking for help your last year too.

They could not moderate their way out of a paper bag and the topics are for people in grade school now

Your blog is a must read and impeccable work. Islanders are very lucky to have you as a blogger.

  8. Thanks for the kind words about the blog.

A lot of very good people at HF many of them found me here when I started this blog and were fantastic.

I get mail telling me how much they like the board now and I'm happy for the folks there and would not want it any other way.

I would love to see the folks on that board win a Stanley Cup together, they all earned it.
