Topics: Moore, Moulson, Depth, Beauchemin, Kovalev, Heatley, Cizikas, LH, Prospect Camp

Updated Wednesday: Switched to a new audio player will see how things go with this version.

Corrections:
Mr Botta, not Mr Logan obviously had the excellent interview at Point Blank with Casey Cizikas. I also mispronounced Francois Beauchemin's name several times (for some reason I could not stop thinking of former Islander Sven Butenschon) when discussing the Leafs signing but here is the correct pronunciation for those scoring at home:

FRAHN'-swah BOH'-shee-mihn

For that matter I did a very poor job on Casey Cizikas as well.

At the regularly scheduled Town of Hempstead Town Board meeting at 10:30 a.m. on July 7, the Town Board will take a step toward final zoning approvals with a vote on the completeness of the Draft Generic Environmental Studies. These studies were conducted in cooperation with the Town of Hempstead. The meeting will be held at Town Hall, located at One Washington Street, Hempstead, NY.

Please note, a story which appeared in the July 6, 2009 edition of Newsday incorrectly stated that this meeting was being held on July 6.

The same Newsday story also indicated that the Town will be holding public hearings related to the project on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. More information to follow from the Town of Hempstead on the time and location of this important meeting. The public hearing is the most important time for supporters of the project to turn out and let their voices be heard. Please put this date on your calendar!

NYIFC Audio Update 7/3

New York Islander Fan Central | 7/03/2009 05:47:00 AM

Topics: Comments on Thursday signings and where they fit the organizational depth chart, can this team get younger on defense as they have up front?

Islander Team finances/owners losses/prospect development dictating the clubs moves in free agency along with few roster spaces. Who is left in free agency and why go back to players who are middle of the road talents after waiting years for Bergenheim, Comeau, Tambellini? All to do about enforcers and fights by appointment that mean less and less in today's NHL. Next week's LH meeting day before Tavares introduction. What this owner spent for years with little return and what Nassau-Smg will not give Islanders now to help them become more financially viable.

Why did Komisarek have to knock Islanders and why so many players change teams and fail because the chemistry they had where they were contributed to their solid play.

At this point why not just give high draft picks like Figren, Joensuu or what looks like a solid signing like Trevor Smith a spot?

Dany Heatley " sleeping on it " regarding trade to Edmonton for now (I believe he turned down deal at first) but bonus is due from Senators at 11:59pm on 7/1.

Front-loaded contracts and the advantages corporate teams have to write-off such losses and trade players after big bulk of contract has already been paid. UFA, Gomez trade and possible Atlantic Division moves by other teams that effect Islanders. UFA, Snow's comments on Rechlicz, possible enforcers and goaltenders available for the Islanders.

I may have a second audio update Wednesday and add a crawl for the latest signings, I did add a trade tracker to the free agent section and may create a section for all Islander related transactions.

History suggest this is not the busiest day for the Islanders but it's expected to be in Bridgeport.

Klementyev, Lee, Cizikas, Lawson & Group II

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/28/2009 08:01:00 PM

One more written entry, a final wrap of the draft with some articles I found that would not work on an audio entry.

Russian Prospects.com: has a profile of Islanders 4th round selection Anton Klementyev who there has been very little information on.

GopherHole.com: Has an interview with Andres Lee from November of 2008 where he will attend Notre Dame eventually (for 09-10 will be in USHL with Green Bay Gamblers) but his sport has yet to be determined between football and hockey, Lee is the Islanders 152nd pick in the 2009 Draft.

OHL.com: Has Casey Cizikas profile but Sportsnet.ca has a full interview with the Islanders fourth round selection from January where he came off a first half where he struggled.

It should be noted according to Mr Fornabaio back in April in a Ct Post entrythe Islanders-Sound Tigers had the following players who had to be qualified, some like Colliton went to Europe.

GROUP II (restricted, pending qualifying offer) -- Jeremy Colliton (V-320), Blake Comeau, Jamie Fraser, Jack Hillen, Nathan Lawson, Peter Mannino, Jason Pitton, Trevor Smith by this time which we have nothing official about from the team or the media.

It should be noted in our 3/5/09 articles Nate Lawson discussed the new contract he signed with the Islanders at the trade deadline here/not available and here which still is that replaced his AHL contract signed last summer. Lawson at the time was leading the AHL in save percentage (.938) and second in goals-against average (1.81).

How can someone be a group II free agent on an April list who was resigned in March?

So far Newsday or the Ct Post has had nothing on who Garth Snow issued a qualifying offer to for those wondering while many newspapers covering their teams have.

Thoughts on Day Two of Draft

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/27/2009 02:14:00 PM
These are the kinds of days fans pick up a program and become draft experts, it has to be noted some teams conduct drafts even without a gm as we saw with Florida and last season with Tampa or in the past with Montreal.

Garth Snow has to trust the people he hired also to balance out the clubs long-term needs. Over the years many New York Islander fans (myself included) have placed so much importance in the general manager's role with regard to the draft (and everything regarding a team) we all forget this comes down to the scouts and in this case assistant gm Ryan Jankowski and the people on the staff world-wide.

They have meetings make a draft board of their own and decide who they want and when they can get that player. In many cases I have read the gm has less impact than the head scout. General managers do not live on the road in Europe during the NHL season visiting prospects, they send reps to scout games and sometimes interview players.

The gm usually is checking in on his picks already selected, along with going to the WJC and working with his NHL team.

Which lead us to this weekend.

For years we read the New York Islanders had to get some prospects to backup Rick DiPietro. They had Stefan Ridderwall, Kevin Poulin and Jase Weslosky along with Peter Mannino and Nate Lawson in Bridgeport but apparently this was the day Ryan Jankowski and the scouts decided to get serious with their two selections who ranked in the top five for European goaltenders.

Was it the right move not to add more size at forward/center/defense? More than a fair question considering these were not franchise prospects and a player like Ferraro was grabbed immediately along with some other first rounders who dropped but the Isles have neglected the goaltending for a long time in terms of top level players, this was a weak goaltending draft.

And yes Figren, Marcinko, Joensuu, Smith and a few others have to get some kind of chance, you remember them, the other draft prospects? (Smith was UFA, like Bentivoglio and Hennigar)

You also have to look at last summer's draft where they had so many picks and so many propsects under contract Max Gratchev could not be signed.

Do I absolutely think that means DiPietro cannot play? Absolutely not but it does mean they wanted some serious potential backups in their system.

I'm sure on paper no one among fans is doing cartwheels but on day one they got the player they had to get. Is deHaan the right pick and did the Isles overpay in picks to trade for him? There are indications he could be and they did but that remains to be seen for years.

Would he have lasted to 26th or even 16th? Obviously Jankowski did not think so.

Not much else today if anything and it will take years on some of these other players but Isles did not get bigger or tougher in a draft they had a lot of picks to address some holes. Isles constant trading did not help the crawl as they got back some picks they had earlier but I think we got it right in the end. Sidebar has draft section and Prospect Blog Page has full 2009 Draft section already.

Btw, If I read one more absurd article the Islanders can have a Pittsburgh like turnaround.......

Who writes this stuff?

Please wake up out there, Pittsburgh won a league-wide lottery after a lockout for a franchise player after being brutal for years (same lottery the Isles could have won just as easily) and it's fair to write without Crosby the team that was in tenth place this year (or where the Isles were last year around the trade deadline) would have missed the playoffs and have stayed on the outside to this day. Pittsburgh's so-called rebuilding also included anything but going with prospects after a ton of veterans signed post lockout (Crosby lottery) who fell on their faces with LeClaire, Recchi, Palffy and Mario Lemieux among others.

Imagine the reaction if Snow signed two or three Mike Knuble's next week to go with Doug Weight?

Whatever the Isles do unless they sign a ton of veterans, it will be nothing like how Pittsburgh got where they are which included 1/3 of their forwards in game seven as former New York Islanders.

That mostly does it for the written blogs again, whatever happens from here (if anything) we will go back to audio format.

New York Selects CASEY CIZIKAS C 92nd pick.

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/27/2009 11:13:00 AM

Casey Cizikas, C
2008-09 Stats
HT WT Team
5-10 190 Mississauga (OHL) 55 16 20 36 39 -15

Scouting Report: After making the 2008 OHL All-Rookie Team, his play regressed last season and he wound up with five fewer points in seven fewer OHL games in 2008-09 than in his freshman campaign... is a smart offensive player with pretty good playmaking instincts and decent hands... is undersized (5-10, 190 pounds), so he must get stronger and become a more committed defensive player in order to maximize potential... doesn't play a physical game...

New York Selects G ANDRES NILSSON 62nd

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/27/2009 10:50:00 AM
The Islanders have just selected goaltender Anders Nilsson with the No. 62 pick, the fifth ranked European Goaltender.

NHL.com: Andres Nilsson profile along with Hockey Forecaster.

Anders Nilsson

Junior Team: Lulea Jr (Swe-Jr)

Final Rank: European 5th

Born: March 19th 1990 Birthplace: Sweden

Height: 6’5” Weight: 220lbs

Another hulking Scandinavian goalie, Anders Nilsson has been flying under the radar for a draft crammed with talented Swedes. With that said many are comparing the Lulea goaltender as a younger, perhaps more consistent Mikko Koskinen who, unlike the breakout Finn, has enjoyed two good seasons tallying a .927 save percentage in his first year as a starter last season.

Noted as a consistent performer at the junior level, Nilsson even enjoyed 27 minutes in a senior Elitserien net allowing zero goals on ten shots. Believed to be technically sound, Nilsson is an intelligent reader of the game who challenges shooters in a tight butterfly.

Like many an unsung European junior, Nilsson has an air of quality about him that suggests a deep draft position will offer great value.
