Some Newsday Double Standards

New York Islander Fan Central | 1/04/2009 05:48:00 PM |
Good thing Newsday created a hockey blog for Mark Herrmann to basically not do any entries for virtually the entire month (12/2-12/29) of December. He did have an entry recently about the WJC where he wrote for about the third time recently (in Ranger/Islander articles) about possible/future Islander draft pick Jonathan Tavares here with Saturday's update about his Wednesday hat-trick.

NYI Fan Central Comments:

Actual comments or game statistics from Newsday staff on Islander prospects at the WJC playing there now? None.

Mike Casey sometimes blogs in Mr Herrmann's space, Saturday he posted a video of Pens star Sidney Crosby fighting with a helmet on against the Panthers in a loss here where he talks at length about the code where players should not be fighting with a face shield.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Apparently Mr Casey had selective amnesia when Ranger Nigel Dawes instigated a fight against the Islanders Monday and did not take off his face shield to fight Mike Comrie because he did not write a word about Dawes, Bettman or the code.

Newsday: Neil Best apparently when reporting television ratings for the NHL outdoor game that were up slightly forgot to note New York as usual was not in the top ten.

Top 10 Metered Markets (rating/share):
1. Chicago 11.8/21
2. Detroit 10.5/20
3. Buffalo 10.1/20
4. St. Louis 5.3/10
5. Pittsburgh 4.4/8
6. Denver 4.2/10
7. Providence 3.5/7
8. Indianapolis 3.4/6
9. West Palm Beach 3.3/6
10. Orlando 3.2/5

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Apparently that would not go over well for Mr Best's future comments NY must be the host city for the next game. These numbers are consistent with recent ratings for ASG and the Stanley Cup Finals with New York buried.

Recently I wanted a weather report and clicked on Newsday. The writer of the forecast? Former Islander beatwriter John Valenti from a decade ago.

Just because someone who is a professional writer who does hockey articles at a given time does not make them a hockey expert. Mr Valenti used to kill the Islanders in print which is sometimes fair but given Newsday's overall coverage many times is questionable.
