Islanders website: Reports goaltender Rick DiPietro will be shut down for the season with his comments and those of general manager Garth Snow.

"This has been one of the most frustrating situations I have ever had to deal with, but this is the right decision for me and the team," said DiPietro. "I am confident this will allow me to make a complete recovery, be ready in plenty of time for next season and compete to my highest ability for many years to come. I’d like to thank Islanders fans for their patience and I look forward to playing in front of them next season."

"After extensive consultation we feel this decision is in the best interest for Rick and the team," said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. "This will allow Rick ample time to make a full recovery for next year. There has been no discussion of this being a career-threatening injury and we expect Rick to make a full recovery."

Newsday: Greg Logan reports associate team orthopedist Elliott Hershman comments that continued swelling in DiPietro's surgically repaired left knee is the source of the problem and will rest for the next 6-8 weeks. At that point, a decision will be made regarding the next step.

Since there is no ligament damage, Hershman said reconstructive surgery won't be necessary, however further surgery on the meniscus remains a possibility.

The most optimistic prognosis is that DiPietro will be ready when training camp opens in Saskatoon, Sask. on Sept. 12. At this time the injury is not considered career-threatening at this time but he needs to be monitored.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
The most optimistic prognosis is he is ready for camp? That means he will likely be in the same situation he was this fall.

That also means Garth Snow has to upgrade his goaltending for the long-term at some point.

DiPietro is a world-class goaltender, they have to do whatever it takes for him to return to full health and look out for his career.

Point Blank: Mr Botta has more insights from the doctor about the injury.

Tsn.ca: Reports goaltender Dany Sabourin was placed on waivers Tuesday by Edmonton.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Waivers work by NHL standings in reverse, Garth Snow has first chance if he wants to claim him which I would think he would unless he would prefer Mannino play or wants to do better with the break coming and make a trade.
