Islander News Articles 3/17

New York Islander Fan Central | 3/17/2009 03:18:00 AM
Newsday: Greg Logan's article is on defenseman Mark Streit with head coach Scott Gordon's comments the defender does not sacrifice defense for offense and did not know any defender having a better season as Streit discussed his powerplay goals in Sunday's game and possible Norris consideration.

St Cloud Times: Kevin Allenspatch reports on the end of St Cloud State's with comments from Islander 4th round prospect goaltender Jase Weslosky, who says he will return for his senior season but faces competition for a spot in goal.

Sports Business Journal: Tripp Mickle-Eric Fisher reports the league and team Cablevision appear ready to settle their lawsuit with seemingly the Dolan's record for losing still perfect as this article claims they will have to pay 15m for the league's legal fees as part of what is still being negotiated along with the latest poor NBC ratings for Dick Ebersol's Ranger-Flyer weekly Msg spamfest here.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
It should be noted the Ranger-Bruin game generated a very low 0.8 the week before and that's with Islander and Devil fans helping those numbers that could not beat NASCAR or out of town basketball games in New York City.

It's time to show the best teams, not the ones Dick Ebersol has a business relationship with for the good of the league. A lot of teams in this league can do as well or better than a 0.8 rating.

Daily News: Elliot Olshansky's prospect features this week centers on Islanders goaltender Jase Weslosky

Also noted fellow prospect Shane Simms was named to the CCHA's Notable Performers list.

NY Times: Nathan Sandals has an article on the NCAA hockey tournament with a few words on Islander prospect Doug Rogers five game point streak.

Point Blank: Mr Botta has the latest from Friday's practice which includes comments from head coach Scott Gordon on Dean McAmmond and Jesse Joensuu.

Jon Sim is expected to make his Bridgeport debut tonight against Binghampton.

Fair to write if Sim produces as he did recently and still is placed on waivers, then demoted with all these injuries he is not a part of the clubs future regardless of his contract running another season.

I would expect a buyout in his future and a recall only for the final days of the regular season so some players can get ready for Bridgeport's playoffs.

Should be interesting if Sim is on off Bridgeport's clear-day list.

Update also includes another Islander prospect, Jase Weslosky, stopped 51 of 55 shots last weekend against MSU, ranks second in the WCHA in save percentage (.926) and fourth in goals against average (2.32).

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has the Sound Tigers Notebook.

Ct Post: Mr Fornabaio reported Jesse Joensuu stalked out of Sound Tigers' dressing room Tuesday morning after practice brushing past Bridgeport's media relations/game night operations director Kimber Auerbach with a teammate commenting about how mad he was.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Head coach Jack Capuano's comments say it all.

Islander News Articles 11/22

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/22/2008 01:50:00 AM
Newsday/AP: Has the early recap of the Islanders 5-2 loss to the Devils.

Newsday: Apparently Newsday is having some web problems so Mr Logan had the game article at this time in the Islanders Newsday blog where he asks head coach Scott Gordon why Mitch Fritz did not get on the ice in the third period or play much? Bill Guerin expects to see a suspension for Mottau's actions while Brent Sutter defended his player which drew criticism from Mr Logan because he was very outspoken about the hit against Brandon Sutter.

Updated:
Newsday: Mr Logan's article for Saturday's paper with Bill Guerin's comments.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I kind of see where Scott Gordon is going with over extending his bench with no Nielsen, Hunter (after his fight) and if it was fair to put Fritz in cold but on the other hand no doubt Fritz has a lot of games where he goes in cold to fight to change momentum or at least stand up for a teammate at the risk of his safety.

Mr Logan got it correct, if dressing Fritz is overtaxing a roster that has three games in four nights and he is not going to play he has no business being here at all. I can understand if the head coach felt the Islanders still had a chance and did not want to throw it away with a penalty but again they needed a skater with finishing skills in this game and should have had one so no one is taxed or looking ahead to the next game.

I'm a little disappointed in Brent Sutter here but if he said he did not see the hit or the replay I will give him the benefit of the doubt until he does. After that I expect to see him be just as outspoken as he was when his son got injured on a completely clean hit.

Bill Guerin and Doug Weight defended Pock as a clean player but no one criticized the five game suspension among the players and in fact supported the excessive action to protect everyone.

Newark Star-Ledger: Rich Chere had comments from Bill Guerin on Mottau while Brent Sutter and Kevin Weekes downplayed their teammates hit in the game recap along with the notebook which included Colin Stephenson here who used to write Islander game articles in the Daily News.

Daily News : Kristie Eckert in the Devils recap had Bill Guerin's comments calling for a suspension of Mike Mottau while Ms Eckert reports Scott Gordon said after the game that Frans Nielsen may have a head injury to go with a right knee injury.

NY Post: Mark Everson has the Devils centric coverage on their win points out along with Mike Mottau's comments on a possible league review that the Islanders have scored more than three goals twice all season.

NY Post: Dan Martin has comments from Islander defenseman Mark Streit about playing at the Nassau Coliseum vs Montreal.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
All this print space for a long article with Mark Streit that could have been written back in October for all we know but no game coverage?

Daily News: Eliot Olshansky in Devils Prospect article for the news on Friday also included Islanders prospect Jase Weslosky, a goaltender at St. Cloud State, shared WCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors with 48 saves on 51 shots as St. Cloud swept then-No. 4 Denver & prospect Blake Kessel, a defenseman at No. 13 New Hampshire, scored the first goal of his collegiate career on Saturday in the Wildcats' 8-6 loss to No. 5 Boston College.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
This has by far been the best hockey work at the Daily News for all three local clubs this year with the Islander prospects receiving their fair amount of space and more. Just hard to know when it will be released because that aspect has not been consistent.

Enterprise News.com : Glen Farley has an interview with Steve Carlson from the movie Slapshot where he talks about Islander head coach Scott Gordon
about his playing days and what he would bring to the Islanders crediting the job he has done with comparisons to Bruins head coach Claude Julien.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio in the Sound Tigers blog notes Mike Sillinger will not be reporting to Bridgeport until Sunday for those wondering if he could now be recalled to the Islanders instead?

Newsday: Erik Boland has Ted Nolan's comments on Tambellini going down to Bridgeport along with Frans Nielsen returning to the Islander lineup. Matt Spiller is likely to return to New York but everything else is not decided at present.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Bridgeport has games Saturday and Sunday. Colliton did not play for Bridgeport Friday so it looks like he stayed in New York. With Nielsen back and perhaps Comrie I think the Isles need one other forward.

Spiller or another defender has to come up.

Times Union: Matt Graves and Buzz Grey have Islander prospect Shea Guthrie's comments after his game winning goal for Clarkson against St. Cloud State on Friday in the NCAA East Regional semifinals in Albany against fellow Islander prospect, goaltender Jase Weslosky.

St Cloud Times: Kevin Allenspach's coverage had comments Islander prospect Jase Weslosky was the best player on the ice with thirty eight saves.

AHL.com: Reports the Sound Tigers won a big game Friday night at home against Hershey 4-2. Jeff Tambellini, Tim Jackman, scored for Bridgeport. Steve Regier had an assist, Matt Spiller had the empty net goal. Joey MacDonald made twenty nine saves. Ben Walter had two assist.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio
has comments from Ben Walter, Jeff Tambellini & Jack Caupano on Bridgeport's huge win against Hershey.

Saturday Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, 7 p.m

Harrisberg Daily News: Has the Bears coverage.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio blogs on what he considered a fun game for both sides.

Islander News Articles 10/27

Newsday: John Jeansonne's Saturday article reports on the reaction to Michael Farber's SI article on Chris Simon, Darryl Bootland being sent to Bridgeport (provided he clears waivers) and Bates taking his spot in practice on the fourth line. Ted Nolan talks about getting back to NHL games starting Saturday against Carolina who lost 7-4 at home to Montreal Friday night and will be playing their fourth game in six days.

"We addressed the team about that," coach Ted Nolan said. "We need a strong mental approach to get back into the swing of things. Whoever you play you've always got to be on your toes."

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio reports on the Sound Tigers traveling to Norfolk for a game Saturday with Steve Stirling's Admirals. Darryl Bootland will likely play if he clears waivers at noon but the Sound Tigers will be carrying thirteen forwards.

Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Norfolk Admirals
WHEN — Tonight, 7:15
WHERE — Scope, Norfolk, Va.
ON THE AIR — WAVZ-AM 1300; Webcast and B2 Networks Internet pay-per-view at www.soundtigers.com

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Chris Botta was quoted in Newsday as saying Michael Farber's article did not include factual errors, however it did not include anywhere he could not fly to his hearing in Toronto because of his concussion so it had to be held in New York. Why would the league office stand for that if he did not have a concussion and was not injured?

Mr Farber's comments give the impression Simon knew exactly what he was doing. Only Chris Simon knows what his intent was and Farber could be right about this. That written the SI writer is not a doctor and to give the impression Simon was was not hurt is unfair also because he does not know.

In the end Mr Farber did get a lot of quotes from the NHL fraternity all defending Chris Simon even though in this case his actions cannot be defended regardless of what uniform he currently wears.

John Jeansonne did not go easy on Simon either Friday and should not have if he is quoted as not reading the article but told team officials he did.

Michael Farber is a long time New York Hockey fan who used to go to the old Msg, last I know he worked out of Montreal. He now has a blog at SI and invites fans to engage him a throw down at a website called Fan Nation here.

I'm going to send Mr Farber my comments here and see if he can answer my questions, if he responds I will post it here in the future.

St Cloud Times: Kevin Allenspach has an update on Islander prospect Jase Weslosky, who made a career-best 39 saves and helped to end the Huskies three-game winless streak. His save percentage shot up to .947 and his goals-against average shrunk to 1.50.

Huskies coach Bob Motzko:
"The win starts with Jase," "Our transition game isn't real good. We're turning the puck over. The best way to put it is we're a pretty easy team to play against right now."
