Islander News Articles 11/20

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/19/2008 09:52:00 PM
Newsday: John Jeansonne has comments from Doug Weight on working with the teams youth and how things have changed from when he broke into the league. Head coach Scott Gordon had more details of Kyle Okposo's " not so serious " hand injury and working Brendan Witt back in with less minutes.

Mr Jeansonne also wrote about Weight's impressive offensive production to this point.

Chicago Sun-Times:Len Ziehm reports former Islander Aaron Johnson who did not make the Hawks opening night roster is tied for second in the NHL with a plus eleven rating and a few goals/assists as part of a third pairing unit in Chicago with his comments.

NHL Notes:
Steve Regier was again recalled by the Blues to the NHL club.

I wonder if Rick DiPietro pulled himself out of a game after allowing five goals if Newsday/local media would ignore it or would the critical of showing up his coach and team especially if the same goaltender a year ago complained about who was on the ice at the end of a game here?

Islander News Articles 8/12

New York Islander Fan Central | 8/12/2008 05:39:00 AM
Midland-Reporter Telegram: Len Heyward has more on the Islanders new affililation with Odessa as General Manager Joe Clark comments on the agreement which is for one year.

Ottawa Sun/several outlets: Report former Islander Jamie Rivers will return from Moscow Spartak in 08-09 and play for the Chicago Wolves.

St Pete Times: Lightning beatwriter Damian Cristodero blogs on Mike Sullivan and John Tortorella not making the final three with speculation on the future for both.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
As of the time I posted this update Boston Globe/Providence Journal, Toronto Star/Sun, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Craig Custance Sporting News & New York papers have nothing in their Tuesday early editions or blogs with anything new on Isles selecting a coach.

Sure would be nice if one time the New York Islanders website broke their own news at the same time for everyone.

Barrie Examiner: Glenn Wilkins has comments from former Islander Aaron Johnson on the circumstances that did not make it into Newsday.

While trying to remain diplomatic, Johnson admits the situation in the Islander boardroom leaves him scratching his head.

“(Ted is) a player’s coach, a guy like me, who goes out and competes every night, who shows respect for guys who are gritty and work hard. He was awesome to play for, and unfortunately, was caught in another tough situation this year, and now, he’s out of a job looking for another one. But I’m sure he’ll be back.”

“It seemed like (the Islanders) were in the right direction for a bit. I mean, from a player’s standpoint, everything was great, the chemistry was great with the guys, but there was so much pressure to win, and there was a difference of opinion between (General Manager) Garth (Snow) and Teddy, because there were no issues between Ted and the players; he was a great coach.

“The guys enjoyed playing for him and put out a good effort for him, but as a player, you don’t always see what’s going on behind the scenes, but, obviously, there was something there.”

Islander News Articles 7/19

New York Islander Fan Central | 7/18/2008 10:43:00 PM

Mr Logan also reports Garth Snow indicated he expects to begin interviewing candidates for the next head coach sometime next week.

Cape Brenton Post: T.J. Colello has a few words from Aaron Johnson who signed with Chicago last week that he considered last season with the club a wash in the short time he played here.

Islander Notables

New York Islander Fan Central | 7/11/2008 03:49:00 PM
Islanders website: Has an update on ticket sales with comments from said Executive Director of the Islanders Business Club Mike Bossy.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
They need that number to get to 10,000 somehow which seems impossible for all the hits they take in the media pushing them back two steps for every one step they try and take forward.

Islanders website: John Hill has the first update on the clubs prospect camp which will run from July 14th to July 18th with a partial list of the players attending. Bryan Trottier will be at the rink all week helping out the young Islanders, while Ken Morrow will be on-site from Wednesday to Friday with a number of media outlets on hand.

St Pete Times: Damian Cristodero blogs on the resignation of general manager Jay Feaster with his comments how he was left on the sidelines for all the recent moves by the Bolts after Tsn reports on the settlement of his contract terms here.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Can you imagine the shockjocks in the local media and in Canada that would have killed Charles Wang in print if he pulled what Tampa Bay's new ownership just did? I did not see the writers down there trashing the club like we see here and that franchise is coming off a season they finished 30th that let the staff run everything at two of the most critical times of the year while it's gm was on the outside.

THN.com: Ryan Dixon does an article critical of the club in what he feels is an astonishingly sad series of moves with the latest signing 37-year-old Doug Weight over Kristian Huselius that signals an official organizational commitment to acquiring B-level talent, as he goes on to review the late nineties moves and takes numerous shots at the clubs impact in the region.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Fine line for me including a writer and copy editor for THN magazine in with the main news media content but I'm not going to keep something off the blog just because it's negative about the club.

Having written that if Doug Weight was signed last summer statistically it would have been a good signing much less comparing it with Columbus signing Huselius and I did not read these shock jock tactics with regard to the Devils signing Holik. All this other stuff from almost a decade ago is completely worthless today with almost all of those players having moved on to multiple clubs since leaving New York and none of them with a cup ring to date.

Seemed to me like the writer needed the " what if " game just to make up for his current knowledge of the club and half of Yankee Stadium would have been filled with Yankee fans if the Islanders played an out of market team in an outdoor game.

Of course when Adam Proteau of the THN
here produced his worst signings in UFA Doug Weight did not make the list.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
If I recall correctly Fedotenko made this list a year ago from some writer, I do not remember if it was Adam Proteau. Likely Scott Burnside but what else would be new if it were him?

Fedotenko I believe got 2.5m from Pittsburgh.

Orange County Register: Dan Wood reports Brian Burke one day after suggesting that the NHL look into a potential Edmonton Oilers tampering violation regarding right wing Corey Perry, said Friday that the Ducks will file a formal charge with the league.

A day after all sides said they would respect the other leagues contracts Alexander Radulov under contract to the Nashville Predators signed with Ufa of the Russian Superleague here.

Predators Website/other outlets: Have a statement from Nashville gm David Poile and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly that Radulov is expected to be in Nashville next season and that the RHL is expected to abide by it's agreement made yesterday.

NHL.com: Now lists Islanders defenseman Aaron Johnson with the Chicago BlackHawks.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Aaron Johnson did a good job for the Isles when he was finally healthy, by all reports he was a classy individual and I hope he finds a team that will give him more minutes. Best of luck to Aaron Johnson.

NYI Fan Central Final Review Aaron Johnson

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/06/2008 07:25:00 AM
Todays season ending review is on defenseman Aaron Johnson.

Entering 2007-08:
Aaron Johnson played over sixty games for Columbus in 2006-07 so any misconceptions this was an AHL defender trying to earn a job in the NHL are not correct. Former Jackets gm Doug McLean wanted to keep him, new gm Scott Howson could not find a spot for him but both liked his game and praised him.

2007-08:
Unfortunately with so many of the same kind of defenders on the Isles roster and the group healthy early Johnson had problems getting into the lineup, when he finally did it was as a forward or rare instances when the club would dress seven defenders.

A knee injury at practice set him back months and he never got his chance at full strength until late January where he played most of the games in February and March and did a very good job at even strength and was a big factor in the clubs six game winning streak. For the most part he was playing fifteen minutes a game or more and on a team that could not score played to a plus rating which was impressive with steady play. Nothing flashy but he showed a lot of good signs and was rewarded with minutes.

Johnson was constantly praised by the staff for his attitude and hard work.

Moving forward:
Johnson enters June as a restricted free agent but like Columbus will he be qualified? The numbers game on this roster and signed defenders make this a tough call for Garth Snow and Ted Nolan to bring him back because there does not seem to be a spot for him again with everyone healthy. Of course it also could mean Garth Snow can trade a defender to give him a spot in the top six which makes me look at Bruno Gervais who is a restricted free agent.

Final Grade:
It took until January before he finally played on a regular basis, he did a solid/steady job on the backline and logged significant minutes and it was impressive.

Aaron Johnson receives a B. I would like to see more but I'm doubtful that will happen here.

Islander News Articles 6/1

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/01/2008 01:08:00 AM

Newsday: Greg Logan writes a state of the Islanders article with comments from general manager Garth Snow on the status of his free agents, Wade Dubielewicz rejecting the teams contract offer, the upcoming draft and who he is close to resigning or will qualify among his restricted free agents.

Summary:
* In short, no offers to Satan, Vasicek, Fedotenko, Berard because the team does not want to load up on players who could take spots from the younger players.

* Tim Jackman is close on a two-way contract extension.

* Jeff Tambellini, Frans Nielsen and Ben Walter will receive qualifying offers along with forwards Sean Bergenheim, Jeremy Colliton and defenseman Bruno Gervais.

* According to the GM Dubie turned down the club's contract offer (which could have
been a two way offer according to Mr Logan) and now is being blamed for DiPietro's workload early because he was in poor shape and could not be trusted by the coaching staff to play.

* The Isles interviewed about 100 prospects in preparation for the draft June 20-21 in Ottawa but the draft board is still not set with another two rounds of amateur meetings.

* Mr Logan speculates Aaron Johnson is not likely to receive a qualifying offer because he can go to arbitration and possibly win a one-way contract to secure one of 23 NHL roster spots.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
No one is sure of the kind of exact contract Garth Snow offered but it sure seems Garth Snow just threw Wade Dubielewicz under the bus and the backup job could now go to Joey MacDonald because that sure seemed like a see ya later if ever I read one.

If he was out of shape there was plenty of opportunity for him to go to Bridgeport and it seems a bit of a reach with a team playing three games in twenty games early in season that Dubie was going to see any work. After his two spot starts early he proved to be a solid goaltender.

Bottom line if Garth Snow or the coaching staff was not happy with his conditioning he easily could have sent him down or outright placed him on waivers. You do not offer a multi-year contract to any player if you feel his reporting out of shape hurt your team. This seems like sour grapes on Snow's part and not classy to release this to the media after a contract negotiation. You thank him for his efforts and move on.

To be fair to the general manager for those who recall in several articles Wade Dubielewicz promised he would report to camp in the best shape of his life here. On April 10th Garth Snow in Newsday's Islander blog talked about Dubie not entering camp in shape and that he selfadmittedly struggled early so this is not just about a player turning down a contract recently as the gm also praised his work later in the season as he talked about a goaltending rotation here.

What does it say about what the gm thinks of Joey MacDonald if a multi-year offer was made to Wade Dubielewicz?

I will be very interested in what Ted Nolan has to say on this given Nolan stuck with Dubielewicz after DiPietro returned to the club after his grandmothers funeral for a critical Ranger game.

It's a fair guess Joey MacDonald becomes the backup goalie with a one-way contract but in today's NHL backup goaltender are not a huge priority.

No surprise the Isles are qualifying almost all the restricted free agents & not making any offers to the unrestricted free agents. Snow's trend seems to be to make an offer and it's not good enough move on.

Not like I want to go off on Greg Logan again folks but being it's June 1st and the deadline is here to sign these players, you think he would have gotten at least a no comment from the general manager on Ridderwall or Johansson?

For what it's worth I asked Mr Fornabaio who of course had a link to the Newsday article in his blog already what the rules are in terms of games/years on how Dubie even if signing a two way contract would not be exposed to waivers? I'm just not sure on these rules.

Long Island Business News: David Reich-Hale back on 5/29 had a brief interview with Islanders
senior vice president of sales, marketing and operations Chris Dey about next season and beyond.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I checked the LI Business News for the meeting summary the last few days, not sure how Mr Dey's comments slipped by or if this publication does update daily? First time I have read the Isles could be interesting in hosting an NHL draft but this overall project will require construction that could run for a full decade.

Bettman, Aaron Johnson, Espn and Hejda

New York Islander Fan Central | 4/29/2008 11:15:00 PM
Cape Brenton Post: TJ Colello has Aaron Johnson's comments after being honored before tonight's World Championship exhibition game in Port Hawkesbury here where Slovenia defeated Norway 6-4.

Colmubus Dispatch: Aaron Portzline reports the Blue Jackets have re-signed defenseman Jan Hejda to a three-year contract worth $6 million.

Hejda, 29, could have become an unrestricted free agent on June 1. He’ll make $2 million per season through 2010-11. Hejda had no goals, 13 assists and a plus-20 rating that was tied for 10th-best in the NHL.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Just seeing how the market is being set for defenseman, that's why I posted this here.

Scripps Howard News Service: Ray McNulty, blames Gary Bettman for the decline of hockey because they left ESPN.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Mr McNulty is one of those former writers from the NY Post (among other publications) here who obviously had blinders on when Espn/Espn2 decided to drop most of it's hockey coverage when they still had the NHL rights to a point Gary Bettman was better off finding someone who would give the league more attention. The ratings game has been spun a lot of directions, the one the folks who are in ESPN's corner never bring up is how low ratings and coverage were on Espn/Espn2 before the lockout.

For all the abuse Mr Bettman takes he is one person. He does not own Comcast or have the right to tell the Wirtz family how to show the Blackhawks in Chicago or what Ed Snider should do with Comcast Flyers or Mike Ilitch what to do with Wings games in Detroit. You think the Six Canadian clubs care one bit about Espn?

If anyone thinks Gary Bettman does not have resistance one team sued the league for control of it's own website this year and lost.

That owner controls the rights to four NHL teams game telecasts.

There are things to blame Gary Bettman about and some of them are fair but many go beyond the commissioner who is not at fault for equipment and body training methods improving which hurt the product by making the space on the ice smaller. You have to put some things on all the owners, the NHLPA, the folks who own the rights to the games and the competition committee.

Nothing is as easy as Gary Bettman deciding this is what's he is going to do and that's final. How many times has Bettman said x owner owns the club, he gives advice when asked but he does not own x team.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has a blog on the AHL playoffs and a few words on the Islanders/Sound Tigers heading into the World Championships.

Nielsen, DiPietro, Snow, Johnson & Nystrom

New York Islander Fan Central | 4/29/2008 02:46:00 PM
IIHF.com: Lucas Aykroyd reports Frans Nielen's shoulder injury will keep him out of the World Championships for Denmark.

The World Championships begin on May 2nd. It looks like Sean Bergenheim for Finland will be the only New York Islander participating.

Ottawa Citizen: Announced Tuesday the formation of the goalie equipment working group which will meet June 11th in Toronto. Rick DiPietro will be a player representative with Martin Brodeur and Ryan Miller. Garth Snow will be representing the NHL with Jim Rutherford (Carolina) Doug Risebrough (Minnesota) and Brett Hull (Dallas), Dany Heatley and Mike Cammalleri (Kings) represent the skaters.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Isles website also updated this with a quick word from Garth Snow.

Cape Brenton Post: Greg Macvicar reports on Team Norway playing Team Slovenia in International Ice Hockey Federation exhibition game tonight will honour retired Montreal Canadians forward Mike McPhee of River Bourgeois and New York Islanders defenceman Aaron Johnson of Port Hawkesbury during the ceremonial faceoff.

Calgary Sun: Randy Sportek has agent Wade Arnott's comments on his client, Eric Nystrom who is an unrestricted free agent this July with the writer speculating about the Islanders.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Sorry folks, too much Robert Nilsson/Frans Nielsen coverage has had me writing Robert in a few posts lately. Obviously it's Eric Nystrom. Hopefully he signs with the Isles so I can get his name correct if for no other reason.

Of course Robert Nystrom is Bobby Nystrom's correct name. For twenty points anyone want to take a shot at his correct middle name ?

Some quick notables

New York Islander Fan Central | 4/25/2008 04:29:00 PM
To answer one e-mail, I can time-release blogs, this way the blog keeps updating with new articles.

Ct Post: Micheal Fornabaio blogged in more detail on the great game in Albany last night. He also looked at the eliteprospects.com report on Kim Johansson and indicated it could mean he's just released from Malmo, not necessarily signing with the Islanders or anyone. The bad news of the day is that former Islander coach Steve Stirling was reassigned and will no longer coach the Norfolk Admirals here.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I may be the only one but I really liked Steve Stirling and felt he did a fantastic job here as a rookie coach getting a club without Yashin, Parrish and other injuries for long stretches in the second half to a ninety two point season and a playoff spot in 2004. He got a fifty point season out of Oleg Kvasha when he needed him to step up and play center. I really like Ted Nolan but what Stirling did his first year was far more impressive then what the Isles did the last two seasons because he had even less to work with.

I wish him luck in whatever he does, classy man who not only did a good job his first season but did a great job in Bridgeport leading the Sound Tigers to a Calder Cup Finals appearance in their first season.

In terms of Kim Johansson we just have to see how it plays out. As I indicated earlier he could be moving to another club in Europe or signing with the Isles. There is no rule that he cannot sign with a club in Europe for next season then do a deal with the Isles unless it's in the contract he must play for his new European club.

With a little more than a month left before he can re-enter the draft it is something that bears watching.

Point Blank: Mr Botta had a great blog the other day on draft rankings and how as fans sometimes we become experts based on one report we read one day. I used to be a lot more in tune with the draft and had a lot of great help back in the mailing list days as I had a poster named Kevin who just did these incredible breakdowns months before on the top one hundred prospects in detail. I do not have that anymore and usually rely on Kyle Woodlief who's work is amazing but like anyone his ratings can be far different than someone else.

That was one reason I did a poll on this now. I was hoping for some feedback to go with the voting and hoped I got the concensus top players correct. With this being such a great draft class some of those second rounders would be first rounders in a weaker class so it's the right time to do a lot of reading from whatever we can find.

International Ice Hockey Federation.com: Updated the rosters for team USA, Russia (no Igor Volkov) and Canada for the World Championships while Katie Strang at Newsday did a brief blog here with no new information whether Sean Bergenheim can play for Finland tomorrow vs Canada given his injury.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Given he was not announced as confirmed for Finland's roster I guess that's new information?

Canadian Business.com: Had an interesting feature using their own standards to determine the value of all NHL players, teams vs salary and production this season.

Cape Brenton Post: T.J Coletto reports Islanders defenseman Aaron Johnson of Port Hawkesbury will be honored this coming Tuesday prior to a World Championship exhibition game between Team Norway and Team Slovenia.

Islander News Articles 2/24:

New York Islander Fan Central | 2/23/2008 10:35:00 PM
Most of these articles were posted after the game Saturday so in effect even after a day game it will be the Sunday articles in the newspapers.

Newsday: Greg Logan has the recap of the Islanders loss to the Devils with Bill Guerin saying he wants the club to be a buyer but it's up to the general manager, that his team is in no position to take night's off as he went into detail about the mistakes made and how they approached a five on three power play against the Devils experience. Aaron Johnson talks about what he calls a misread on Zach Parise's goal and how the club played in the third period.

Newsday: Greg Logan has Ted Nolan's comments on Mike Sillinger's season ending surgery, Josef Vasicek said he has heard nothing about his contract status, Ruslan Fedotenko said he has no good or bad news, and no information at all. Miroslav Satan has not been asked to waive his no trade clause at this time.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
It should be noted Newsday changes it's ap link to the writers actual game article as it's updated later on.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann has a feature on the core of the four weekend coming up March 1st/2nd with Mike Bossy & Butch Goring's comments. Mr Herrmann speculates the organization has hinted that this is the end of the major celebrations.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Seems to me that banner with Bob Bourne's name on it deserves a lot more company in the Islanders announced plans for a Hall of Fame last season.

All of the players part of that core of four who do not have their numbers officially retired should have their night as Bourne did.

Mr Wang's done far more than his part and made up for other owners mistakes, unfortunately there is more to do in that department and it needs to be done because it's the right thing to do. Cannot have Bob Bourne's name on a banner with the retired jersey's and not include the other players who's numbers are not retired.

How many times is Mark Hermann going to make sure to point out past alumni felt they were brought out as props and sent packing? Enough is enough. Let the players have their day and please ask some more hockey questions to these legendary players.

There is no way Mr Herrmann would go in that direction with Ed Giaconmin or Rod Gilbert.

NY Times: Dave Caldwell was allowed to cover the game from both sides which has Bill Guerin's comments on the Isles.

Newark Star Ledger & Bergen Record: Beat writer Tom Gulitti's blog also recaps the Devils win here.

Edmonton Journal: Jim Matheson has Garth Snow's comments on Mike Comrie that he looked for sixty points and is on pace for sixty points, who credited his grit and how he's helped the young players but is not sure he's a number one center but it depends on his own criteria.

Star Tribune: Michael Russo has former Islander Mark Parrish and his comments on how being traded for Roberto Luongo was not easy for him and what he was told by Panthers management beforehand.

Calgary Herald: George Johnson has a nice feature on Isles VP of communications Chris Botta.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio's article is about the two fluke goals Hartford got and a disallowed goal that hit off Matt Keith's chest that was disallowed with Joey MacDonald and Jack Capuano's comments on the game.

Hartford Courant: Bruce Berlet's coverage of the Wolfpack.

Albany Times Union: Report Brandon Nolan wanted to play Saturday but the coach would not allow it, Ted Nolan was in attendance and apparently made the trip after the Devils game in Newark.

Islander/NHL notables

New York Islander Fan Central | 2/15/2008 02:57:00 PM
Canadian Press: Released a full article on Islander defenseman Aaron Johnson with assistant coach Gerard Gallant's comments on how he works with praise for his attitude.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
This is from yesterday. It's too good not to put here for everyone and gives us more on the young defender than we have read this season. Johnson had his first point as an Islander against Toronto.

Updated:
JKP, reponds and says the the CP writer was Neil Stevens, I guessed it was Pierre Lebrun.

Thanks JKP.

Espn: Scott Burnside Friday afternoon lists the Islanders among the sellers at the trade deadline, but does not credit them for the recent wins?

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I bring this up because how can Mr Burnside note Chicago and Edmonton were showing signs of having more wind in their sails but not the Isles who are unbeaten in three? Hawks are 3-1-1 in five games.

Islanders are only six points out of sixth place today so how does that put them automatically in the sellers category today?

It could become that way in a week but for the moment it's time to take a step back until we see. Mr Burnside has been infamous for counting the Isles out early and should know better by now.

NHL.com: Reports Rod Brind'Amour had surgery on his knee and likely out for the season.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Players like Rod Brind'Amour make this a better league, his loss hurts the sport.

Vancouver Sun: Elliott Pap reports Canucks assistant gm and former Islander, Steve Tambellini was hesitant about going to see his son Jeff with the Isles earlier this year with the players fathers and mentors but said Garth Snow was outstanding about it and called the experience fantastic as the Canucks are about to do the same thing.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I guess that did not make it into the New York Times Ranger coverage or Lynn Zinser's blog like Brian Burke-Pat Lafontaine did and will not when the Rangers play Buffalo Saturday.

THN.com: Ken Campbell writes no NHL gm is in a more vexing position at the trade deadline than Garth Snow and does his own speculation at what the team may do at the trade deadline with Mike Comrie's comments about resigning and a bond this club has which is hard to find.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Considering some of the earlier articles Mr Campbell wrote on the team, this is a good one that's fair across the board. He did not know Meyer was resigned but the rest seems to be solid. Wonder if that sit down interview he had with DiPietro at the all-star break helped soften his stance?

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio blogged on today's practice and updated the injuries for tonight's game while Sound Tigers.com did a preview.

Islanders website : Had an update on the effort at games concerning the Light House Project Mike Bossy was profiled in a core of the four preview.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Best pure goal scorer I have ever seen. Never double shifted, always had to play defense and did far better than he ever got credit for as someone Al Arbour trusted on the ice at the end of games. If Mike Bossy played on an offensive club geared for run and gun hockey he could have scored a hundred in a year, he used to say he never looked at the net because it never moved. He knew how to find openings in goaltenders and to date is the only player in league history to score fifty goals nine years in a row. I have no doubt it would have been ten if his back injury which caused his early retirement did not kill him that final year which he talked about in his book titled the Mike Bossy story.

I miss his blog from last year, he did a very good job with it.

Atlanta Journal Constitution: Bill Tiller in my opinion is very unprofessional here with poor journalism that makes me look long and hard at what I put in my blog in terms of credible media sources. Even worse for hockey fans his work appears in the Hockey News here.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
How can the sports editor at the Atlanta Journal Constitution permit that level of content?

In my estimation any of the twelve other folks blogging for the team at the blog box here and even I could provide any of the local newspapers with far superior coverage than this.

Islander News Articles 1/20:

New York Islander Fan Central | 1/19/2008 11:51:00 PM
Newsday: Mark Herrmann's game coverage had Ted Nolan's comments, who felt his team fell apart and got away from it's defensive play trying to increase it's lead. Bill Guerin felt the Islanders had the Flyers beat but got careless with the offensive plays they were attempting and Scott Hartnell got lucky while Rick DiPietro lamented the bad bounce which led to the winning goal.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann's other article is on the Isles used to playing in the cold, Bruno Gervais playing sick against the Devils and some other items.

Daily News: Peter Botte's limited space articles seem to be getting even more limited and was virtually worthless with a few blurbs from Ted Nolan, Bill Guerin and Rick DiPietro while John Dellapina in addition to a full game article had a three page feature on Brian Leetch.

NY Post: Dan Martin's article on the loss had Ted Nolan's full comments on what the Islanders did not do in terms of shooting, back checking and did not give them a pass because of the breaks.

Philadelphia Inquirer: Ray Parrillo's game recap has comments from Scott Hartnell about his lucky breaks.

Courier Post: Chuck Gormley's recaps the game and reports Hartnell's hat-trick was the first time since Brian Propp did it in 1988 a Flyer had three pp goals in the same game. Mr Gormley also writes DiPietro misplayed the puck that hit the glass for the winning goal.

Sound Tigers website: Recaps Bridgeport's 4-3 loss to Albany Saturday.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio recaps Bridgeport's 4-3 loss to Albany Saturday where Wade Dubielewicz made twenty two saves and was still not comfortable with his rebound control. Former Canes goaltender John Grahame faced forty five shots with Brandon Nolan having a big night. Jeff Tambellini had two assist, Kyle Okposo set up a goal with Frans Nielsen
scoring his tenth. Jack Capuano felt his club did not get enough traffic in front of Grahame.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio in his blog recaps Bridgeport's loss, asks Kyle Okposo about his last two weeks and will have a Sound Tigers mid-season report on Monday where the powerplay will not be getting a favorable review.

Albany Times Union: Covers the River Rats.

Newsday: Neil Best has had about three blogs and now an article where NBC analyst Mike Milbury was critical of Ranger forward Jaromir Jagr to where he would not interview with the former Islander gm.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Media guys like Mr Best even though they are about talking media performance are also fans of teams and between the old stories of Msg he seems to be on the Rangers side to where he got in his jab with Milbury under the Spano era logo in one of his blogs. Recently he also did an article where he went out of his way several times to make his point the Isles would no longer be here without Msg's television contract forgetting the club was in operation from 1973-1996 without such a deal. Also Mr Best put up several blogs pushing for more Ranger radio coverage on Eastern Long Island but has no problem with the very limited city coverage of the Isles.

Lancaster Eagle Gazette:Sean Golden has an article on former Islander part time scout Jack Vivian for seventeeen years being made a US citizen with comments from former Islander chief scout and senior vice president of the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers, Jimmy Devellano.

Quick Update

New York Islander Fan Central | 1/18/2008 07:50:00 PM
You miss a day and as always a lot happens.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann apparently did that first promised Newsday Thursday feature with expanded Islander coverage. It was on Trent Hunter wearing the assistant captain's letter, Jeff Tambellini mentoring Kyle Okposo, with comments from Ted Nolan praising his captain and how he would have given the C to Hunter if Guerin were not here.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann's blog Friday reported Brendan Witt is not likely to return Saturday and that Chris Campoli according to Ted Nolan will probably will be out a while. Aaron Johnson played Friday for the Sound Tigers and will be recalled after the game to join the Isles.

Islanders website: Reported Friday morning Wade Dubielewicz was sent to Bridgeport for conditioning to get some work in along with Aaron Johnson's recall to New York. Mike Morrison was recalled to replace Dubie. Ted Nolan discusses the moves made.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
What does all this come down to?

Get past the next four games and hope Martinek, Campoli are ready to return after the All-Star break. Even shut down Witt and Satan if that's what's necessary.

Aaron Johnson will have to do his part and his mobility can help against Philadelphia and Carolina.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio reported in his blog Friday it's likely a two game assignment for Dubielewicz who should start against Albany Sunday.

Draw Fata played Friday for Bridgeport as did Matt Spiller.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann covered the Long Island Cup which is Mr Wang's classy efforts once again bringing over youth teams from China to compete in a tournament that this time will be held at the Nassau Coliseum.

Asked about the Lighthouse Project, Mr Wang wished it were moving faster and expressed his impatience but felt things were moving in the right direction.

AHL.com: Report Dubie started against the Phantoms in Philadelphia and Aaron Johnson was on the back line in Bridgeport's 2-1 shootout win against the Phantoms Friday night. Justin Bourne made his AHL debut, Kyle Okposo was pointless and Jeff Tambellini was the first star. Frans Nielsen had Bridgeport's regulation goal.

Islander News Articles 1/16:

New York Islander Fan Central | 1/15/2008 11:57:00 PM
Newsday: Mark Herrmann covered tonight's game and the lack of shots on goal was the theme of his article with Richard Park, Bill Guerin, Rick DiPietro and Miroslav Satan's comments.

"I don't think the shots were very indicative, I don't know who was doing the shot clock," Park said. "But we had the puck in certain situations but maybe other times we didn't get the puck on net and it just didn't seem like we were very sharp mentally."

Added Bill Guerin, "It wasn't what we were looking for, but there's no excuses. We had a bad first period. We had a good second period and a good third period, that's it."

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Mark Herrmann did not even write about how many shots the Canadians blocked.

Last time Islanders played Montreal they had something like forty five shots, the game did not go down to the final minute and Mike Sillinger had to point out how many shots they did take.

Isles are 4-0 against the Devils btw, Mr Herrmann.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann's other article is about how Mike Komisarek, Christopher Higgins workout together in the summer with Rick DiPietro with both Long Island products praising how competitive the Islander goaltender is.

"Even in summers, if he lets up a goal or if we scrimmage and his team loses, he's sour for the next couple hours. That's the kind of guy he is. That's the kind of goalie I think everybody wants," said Canadiens forward Christopher Higgins of Smithtown, who spends summer months at home with teammate Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace) and both of them work out with DiPietro.

"Whether we go play golf or whatever, it's the same," Komisarek said. "He's always competitive. That's what makes him so successful."

Montreal Gazette: Pat Hickey's game coverage on the Canadians win.

NY Times: Dave Caldwell had a feature on why so many NHL goaltenders today play more games with comments from gm Garth Snow about Rick DiPietro.

“Maybe 10 years ago, that may have been a problem,” said Garth Snow, a former N.H.L. goaltender who is now the Islanders’ general manager, “but goaltenders are some of the best-conditioned athletes on the team. Athletes, in general, are taking care of themselves 12 months a year, and the old way of thinking was, a fat goalie is a happy goalie.”

Snow calls DiPietro, 26, a “machine.” DiPietro’s upper body is chiseled, but all those muscles become apparent only after a game, when he pulls off layer upon layer of padding.

NY Post: Dan Martin had comments from Andy Hilbert on the turnover that led to the Habs first goal, Bill Guerin on the lack of shooting, Rick DiPietro and Ted Nolan on the loss.

NY Post: Larry Brooks has a Devils injury report.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
They even had Ranger reporter Larry Brooks do the Devils off-day article? Someome must be a huge Devils fan at the Post to cover them like this and barely give the Isles more than marginal home coverage and an occasional rare preview. Unless Mark Everson is off expect no Islander coverage from Dan Martin as one article usually fits all when the teams meet. Since Evan Grossman left the Post over a year ago in season no full time beatwriter was hired.

Of course Mr Brooks had his two page Ranger preview and a link to their blog at the Post.

Daily News in their latest disgrace presented by Leon Carer's sports department after not covering the road trip at all did not bother sending Peter Botte, Brian Bohl or any writer to cover last night's game.

Nothing like coming home to the worst hockey media in the county. Pathers were at the Coliseum before the road trip and the all three Florida papers had beatwriters in attendance and filed full articles on the game.

Note-With the buzz from the media settling down on Kyle Okposo Sound Tiger news articles will appear back with the daily Islander articles, too many blogs to keep them seperate full time.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has comments from Aaron Johnson, updates the injuries and recalls in Bridgeport and previews what is the clubs longest road trip of the season starting with another game in Norfolk Wednesday as Jack Capuano talked about Jeff Tambellini's value to his club.

"It'll be good to get some games in," Johnson said, "to get back into the flow of game situations."

Aaron Johnson out six weeks

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/05/2007 07:46:00 PM
Islanders website: Reported today Rick DiPietro will be a game day decision tomorrow depending on how practice goes, but lost forward-defenseman Aaron Johnson with a knee injury for six weeks and that someone will be called up from Bridgeport.

You never want to see that with a guy as dedicated as Aaron Johnson,” said Nolan. "The good news is, when it happened it looked like the injury could have even been worse. I'm glad to hear we'll get AJ back.”

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Remember that depth we had on defense to where Berard could not be signed? Gone and that's barely playing games the last few weeks. No update on Bergenheim or Bates. I guess a winger means Bootland, Tambellini or Blake Comeau. DiPietro by all reports was lucky and with the next game Saturday no reason not to give Dubie the start against a team he beat in a must win game last year if necessary.

Injuries piling up early to a lot of players no one expected to be injured given their history.

DiPietro practices, Baumbach bombs

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/05/2007 01:48:00 PM
Newsday: Greg Logan returned and reported in his blog Rick DiPietro practiced and was pleased with the way he performed. Aaron Johnson suffered an unspecified injury to his right knee in a collision with Brendan Witt. Nolan declined to say who might be called up if Johnson can’t play.

Newsday: Jim Baumbach who did not cover Saturday's game or event has a hard time accepting the fact that Al Arbour gets credit for the win, writes his presence was completely ceremonial and contacted NHL spokesman Frank Brown & Craig Campbell to see if his record or his plaque at the Hall of Fame would be changed.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Jim Baumbach first put out his disclaimer Al Arbour Night seemed to be loads of fun to see him behind the players on the bench provided what had to be an emotional lift and sports needs nights like these. Then he dumped all over the greatest coach or manager in the history of New York Sports outside of Casey Stengel.

That said if he tried this in a Canadian City with a Hall of Fame player or coach he or his editor would be out of a job.

I guess Mr Baumbach needed some attention at the paper or wanted a reaction and my guess is it will come from not only the fans but the organization. He does a perfect job confirming my last blog on media that just does the job required and at times does go out of it's way to keep things negative and in this case seemingly vindictive.

Baumbach did all he could to compare the New York Islanders with a lot of teams and individual accomplishments that do not come close to matching what Al Arbour's Islanders accomplished that are still standing records today for all of professional sports.

First Mark Herrmann makes one angle on the alumni a story for Arbour to comment on now this?

Ted Nolan said what led him to do this since last summer. It was billed as Al Arbour coming back to coach a 1500Th game against a top team which could have beaten the Islanders as badly as Carolina did with Arbour behind the bench.

As for Mr Bambach's claims maybe this is going to start a trend in sports the Islanders should be setting the trend because they set the standard and to this day still hold it. Same thing that was behind Bill Torrey and Al Arbour dressing Bobby Nystrom for one shift for his milestone.

Thanks Jim Baumbach of Newsday for confirming my previous blog on the media correct.

To answer Mr Baumbach the Islanders can do this because they set the standard.

Tomas Pock on waivers, Meyer sent to AHL

New York Islander Fan Central | 10/24/2007 04:03:00 PM
Newsday: Steve Zipay reported in his blog the Rangers placed defense man
Tomas Pock on waivers today.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Considering the Islanders held on to Meyer as long as they did before putting him on waivers and now Berard is out for two weeks to a month this may be something Garth Snow and Ted Nolan consider to get back the depth they lost. Of course, if they do this there is no spot in the lineup for Pock with Johnson as the depth defender on the roster and the Islanders may have to put him on waivers.

My guess is Coyotes gm Don Maloney claims Pock if anyone does.

Updated Wednesday 8pm:
Arizona Republic: Jim Gintonio reports Freddy Meyer went sent to San Antonio because Zbynek Michalek is ready to return for the Coyotes.

Newsday: John Jeansonne updated the Islanders blog and reported Richard Park will take the oath of U.S. citizenship Friday, Aaron Johnson is back on the fourth line right wing spot and that Bates is still working his way back from surgery.

10/18: Logan blog: RW Aaron Johnson

New York Islander Fan Central | 10/18/2007 03:56:00 PM
Newsday: Greg Logan updated his Islanders blog and tells us Bootland is a scratch for tonight while Aaron Johnson will make his Islander debut as a right wing.

“He’s played forward in the past in Columbus on the fourth line,” Nolan said of the 24-year-old Johnson. “We can’t let him sit too long. Every practice, he works his tail off; he’s always in the gym; he’s one of the first guys at practice, and he’s enthusiastic. What we try to instill in this team is that the people that work will get an opportunity, so, tonight, he’s going to get his opportunity. We’ll have an energetic fourth line that will cause some havoc and crash the net.”

“No, I played forward a little bit when I was growing up, but not in juniors. I waited until the NHL to play forward. I played third and fourth-line in Columbus. Obviously, it’s not what I’m used to, but at least I’m going to get into a game situation.”

“It’s awesome,” Johnson said. “This is what I wanted in training camp is to make this team. It’s been tough to be patient, but it’s slowly coming together. I have to be patient and wait for my turn. I’m still young. He’s given me an opportunity to play, and I’ve got to jump on it.”

NYI Fan Central Comments:
A little surprising considering Bootland set up the only goal by a forward last time Islanders played Washington but they have to give him some minutes somewhere and if a defender does struggle or someone is injured on the backline Johnson can slid back to his natural position.

I'm not sure what the club intends to do with Bergeron.

The remaining roster spots available

New York Islander Fan Central | 9/24/2007 03:59:00 PM
Islanders listed the remaining players currently with the club today.

Fair to say we now have a good idea of how few spots are available unless a trade happens or someone like an Andy Hilbert(with a new two year contract) are put on waivers to play in the AHL which is very unlikely.

DiPietro and Dubielewicz are the two remaining goaltenders so the goal tending is set.

Forwards (18)
7 Trent Hunter
10 Richard Park
11 Andy Hilbert
12 Chris Simon
13 Bill Guerin
15 Jeff Tambellini
16 Jon Sim
17 Shawn Bates
18 Mike Sillinger
20 Sean Bergenheim
26 Ruslan Fedotenko
27 Darryl Bootland
37 Kip Brennan
57 Blake Comeau
63 Josef Vasicek
72 Jeremy Colliton
81 Miroslav Satan
89 Mike Comrie

Nineteen skaters for what are eleven spots if Nolan has to dress seven defenders as the club's website said he would do a few days ago.

You take Bates (injured) Bootland, Brennan, Colliton off that list and you are down to fourteen skater for eleven spots. This does not count a suspended Simon for five games who can only play preseason at this time which starts us at thirteen.

Then take Comeau, Tambellini, Bergenheim off the list and we have ten forwards, when Simon returns they have eleven forwards so right now three players are fighting for one temporary spot for five games if seven defenders dress or one permanent spot if six defenders dress.

Of course there will be injuries to present opportunities but this is what it boils down to. I would suggest watch where Nolan uses Tambellini, Comeau and Bergenheim more than the other players.

On defense:
Defensemen (9)
2 Aaron Johnson
4 Bryan Berard
8 Bruno Gervais
14 Chris Campoli
24 Radek Martinek
25 Andy Sutton
32 Brendan Witt
44 Freddy Meyer
47 Marc-Andre Bergeron

If seven defenders dress two players have to go and we know unless a trade happens Martinek, Sutton, Witt and Bergeron are going to play on this team. That leaves five players for three spots and all of them who played significant NHL minutes last season. Campoli, Meyer would have to clear waivers.

This includes signing Bryan Berard which is not a lock for a lot of reasons.

For argument sake you want to get down to seven defenders without a trade just to start the season. You take Gervais and Aaron Johnson and send them to the minors because neither one have to clear waivers. Even if this happened your left with an extra defender to find time for each game which is not the best situation and you have at least one defender in the AHL (Gervais) who should not be there while the other (Johnson) has been impressive in camp reports and played sixty one games in the NHL last season and may not belong in the AHL either.

Of course that is for the present. This is a group of defenders with a long history of injury problems.

Still for right now it's going to be a very interesting week to see who does make this team and what Garth Snow and Ted Nolan do to improve the roster if someone is available who can help.

Updated 5:30pm
Islanders website this afternoon had more on this as Nolan singled out Comeau, Colliton, Tambellini for their work as well as Aaron Johnson. Isles also gave the combos from practice earlier today with comments from Fedotenko and Johnson about tonight's game.

Highlights and Scrimmage report 9/16

New York Islander Fan Central | 9/16/2007 01:18:00 PM
Islanders Website reports Team Trottier takes the Lobster Cup with 6-4 win over Team Gillies in Sunday's scrimmage with Jeff Tambellini scoring two goals in the win.

Kimber Auerbach also wrote a Sound Tigers version of the scrimmage.

Yesterday's first star, Mike Comrie, carried his outstanding play over into today's game. One minute into the first 45 minute session, Comrie streaked in over the blue-line, cut across the offensive zone and wristed a shot that found it's way through the legs of Michael Mole. The intensity was high and full of heavy hitting as Kip Brennan and Tim Jackman exchanged big hits. Team Trottier countered later in the period, when Josef Vasicek took a shot from the circles that Team Gillies starter, Mike Morrison stopped. The rebound was pounced on by Miroslav Satan who jammed the puck past Morrison to tie the score 1-1.

In the second session, Blake Comeau intercepted a pass and took off on a breakaway with Ruslan Fedotenko back-checking on Comeau's fore-hand side. Comeau shielded the puck and backhanded a shot over Team Gillies net-minder, Rick DiPietro for the 2-1 Team Trottier lead. About five minutes later, Team Gillies answered when Sean Bentivoglio blocked a point shot and took off on a two-on-one with Jeremy Colliton. Bentivoglio's initial shot was stopped by Team Trottier goalie for the second session, Wade Dubielewicz, but Colliton picked up the rebound and stuffed it in to even the score at 2-2.

Then play opened up as both teams picked up their third goals apiece within the same minute. Trevor Smith, of Team Trottier, threaded a pass through traffic to linemate Jeff Tambellini who snapped a shot over DiPietro's glove for the 3-2 lead. Team Gillies countered when Jason Pitton sent a cross ice pass to Steve Regier who buried a one timer under the cross bar to knot the score at 3-3. Vying for a spot on the Islanders roster this season, Tambellini picked up his second goal of the game from the same spot he scored his first. On a two-on-one with Satan, Tambellini looked to feed Satan but the passing lane was taken away by Team Gillies defenseman, Simon Lacroix. Tambellini turned his attention to shooting and fired a snap-shot over DiPietro's glove to give Team Trottier the one goal lead with 20 minutes remaining in the session. Dubielewicz would close the door the rest of the way, winning the game for Team Gillies 4-3.

In the shootout, Bill Guerin gave Team Gillies the 1-0 lead, shooting the puck through Dubielewicz's legs. Team Trottier countered when Comeau repeated the same move he made in the game, backhanding a shot over DiPietro's glove to tie the score at 1-1 in the shootout. After Chris Campoli's attempt to regain the lead for Team Gillies rung off the crossbar, Satan took the lead for Team Trottier at 2-1. The competition came down to its last shooter, Jeremy Colliton for Team Gillies. In a move that is rarely seen in the shootout, Colliton wound up and fired a slap shot past Dubielewicz's glove but off the cross-bar leaving Team Trottier as the winners of the Lobster Cup, going 2-0 in both the games and shootouts.

Three Stars of the Lobster Cup Series:
1. Mike Comrie – 4 goals in 2 games: In a losing effort in the final game, Comrie still receives the first star of the series. His line with Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko was the dominating force behind Team Gillies' win yesterday and Comrie was against outstanding today.

2. Jeff Tambellini – 3 goals and an assist in 2 games: Tambellini has proven that hard work in the minors and an intense off-season workout plan could pay off.

3. Josef Vasicek – 2 goals and an assist in 2 games: Vasicek looked dominant on a line with Tambellini and Satan. The big center will be a force on one of the Islanders top two lines this season.

Honorable Mention: Blake Comeau – 3 goals in 2 games: The young prospect is showing Islander coaches that he is right on the cusp and deserves some consideration for a roster spot this season.

Chris Botta updated his Point Blank blog and among those highlights:

* Discusses what some of the players are like off the ice and with the public while noting some players just perfer to stay in the room and spoke a lot of how friendly Guerin, Gervais and some other players are with the public.

* The team is bringing about 30 players for the games in North Bay and Tuesday's game against the Bruins in St. John's, Newfoundland, but could not give out who will be among those players until tomorrow other then to write it will likely be a fairly young lineup Monday and Tuesday and that his hunch is you won't see some of the big names like Guerin, Comrie, Witt and DiPietro until the team plays the Canadiens in Moncton on Wednesday.

* Olivier Labelle continued to show a lot of guts, spunk and snarl. Frans Nielsen, who may play in both games, looks better and better. Also expect to see Aaron Johnson, who played all last season for Columbus, get a long look. A few veteran Islanders mentioned that Johnson is really making a run at a job on the blueline.

NYI Fan Central Commments:
Now that the preseason games are about to begin the emphasis will be on who get's the early opportunities. Site mentioned how well Tambellini has played and now Blake Comeau. Should be interesting what this means for Bergenheim. Would not put much stock into these very early preseason games. Lots of options but very few spots. Vasicek is off to a good start at second line center from the reports. What happens if Aaron Johnson outplays his former Jacket teammate Bryan Berard?

Note-Watched yesterday's scrimmage and did not see Bates even though he was listed in lineup. Could be website error or the forty minute webcast did not show him.

Updated 4pm:

Cory Witt/s media blog had two updates. One on how interviews are done now for preseason preview shows on FSN and how they are incorporated into player features that will appear on Isles TV. The other blog spoke of Ted Nolan and how he will drop the puck at Moncton's home opener.

Witt also told us late Sunday he will have the roster the Islanders will use in the two games Monday and Tuesday.
