Virtually nothing out there on Islanders soon to be likely departing unrestricted free agents, so why not a few words/thanks, best of luck for them moving forward in the hope their NHL careers continue in some cases.

New York recalled Kevin Poulin on Wednesday, David Ullstrom was listed on practice lines.
Nabokov is out with a lower body injury and a contract for next season so despite being on bench in third period against Pens, it's possible they may shut him down for the rest of the season.
Anders Nilsson is still out with his sprained ankle in Bridgeport as of March 17th, for now they have the goaltender on an amateur tryout contract in Dan Clarke. The early projection when Nilsson got hurt was seven to ten days.
New York has games Saturday/Sunday.
Bridgeport has three games this weekend with huge playoff implications.
Mikko Koskinen (on loan) is participating in the playoffs with his team up 3-1 in their series. Beyond one video nine days ago of Rick DiPietro there is nothing to suggest he is ready to return to practice much less play a hockey game.
Cody Rosen to the best of our knowledge has played one game for Clarkson.

Round two with Pittsburgh and likely Al Montoya's chance to see if he can continue to elevate his game.
Not surprised at all with what happened in Pittsburgh besides how Fleury played.
All teams hit the wall after a long winning streak which we wrote about before the game. Ottawa had eight goals against the Pens, the signs were there despite the Sunday win for Pittsburgh.
The second half against Florida was a sign the Isles had some extra jump to their game.
Isles should have had a few early in the third and put them away handily. The shots against seemed very inflated.
Comments for that game are on twitter.
Unless Montoya struggles or the Pens are on the power-play a lot, I expect another very competitive game against Pittsburgh.

One point by Buffalo eliminates New York from playoff contention. The trends suggest Minnesota (first in Western Conference in December) will not catch the Isles. Toronto could well fall past the Isles.
As written last week trends mean nothing.
New York needs seven points to match their best season since their last playoff team. At best it will be statistical progression. The club has not had a five hundred season since 2006-07.
The win in Pittsburgh matches last seasons point total.
Our thoughts have been you miss the playoffs x years in a row, your franchise should not be awarded a lottery pick at all.
However this blog does not make the rules.
The NHL lottery is April 10th.

Islanders website reported goaltender Al Montoya underwent successful surgery last week to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He was hurt during the World Hockey Championships while playing for Team USA, but the club expects him to be ready for training camp.
NYIFC Comments:
Rick DiPietro may go into camp the healthiest of any goaltender in the organization with Montoya, Poulin, Koskinen coming off surgery and Nilsson perhaps not signing by deadline. I do not discount any alternative but if Nilsson is signed there is no spot for Nate Lawson who is UFA.
Too many injured goaltenders/or potential injuries with questions marks combined with spotty play and inexperience.
Islanders website also reported prospect Jason Gregiore decided to forgo his senior year at the University of North Dakota, opting to turn pro next season via the Blake Wheeler route here.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio reports via Grand Forks Herald that Gregoire will take advantage of a loophole in the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement that allows him to become a free agent 30 days after withdrawing from school if not signed by the team that drafted him.

The archives in early May here had articles on Gregiore perhaps leaving school to sign with the Islanders.
This is the first time I have seen this scenario pop-up with an Islanders prospect, who is apparently going the Blake Wheeler route which means he's testing free agency and not signing with the Islanders before any deadline. I expect the Islanders website to report all information and read little into them reporting this.
Based on his production, there is a good chance there will be competition for his services. Anything can happen but expect a good chance Gregoire signs elsewhere with Moulson, Grabner, Martin locked up on left wing and Comeau coming off back to back twenty goal seasons. Sure there are spots on wing at Bridgeport.
If he cannot be signed there will be a compensatory pick awarded.
The clock is running on Casey Cizikas.
Oilers website: Reports the Edmonton City Council approved the framework for a new arena deal in Edmonton where the city says the deal will keep the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL in the city for 35 years.
The arena will cost $450 million, with the city providing $125 million, the Katz Group paying $100 million and $125 million coming from a user-paid facility fee.
NYIFC Comments:
No public referendum was required in Edmonton for the city to pay 125m, but here political by-partisan football. Nassau can always simply skip the public referendum vote, save the taxpayers the 2m cost and just hammer out an agreement? But that would mean working together for the good of the hockey team.

Long Island Business News: Ed Mangano gave his State of the County speech on 4/11 with comments on the future of the Nassau Coliseum/New York Islanders.

NYIFC Comments:
Charles Wang is on record as saying the team will be here through the end of it's lease and is not for sale, he paid for rights to run the Coliseum through the end of the lease but there is an out in that clause.
Mr Wang outright owns the Marriott Hotel.
Only Mr Wang/Rechler know if both run the Coliseum via Smg amended agreement.
There is no MOU between Nassau County only with Charles Wang. Scott Rechler must be included, they were both approved as developers.
As for Mr Mangano's comments Monday, nothing new but clock is ticking louder.
It seems his final card is to dump it in the taxpayers laps via referendum, something that did not happen with Yankees/Mets taxpayer bonds, the Garden's forever tax exepmtions, the Prudential Center, Atlantic Yards or the new Meadowlands Stadium infrastructure.
Agreements got done behind closed doors, taxpayers had to pay for parts of what was agreed to.
Obviously all three alternatives have been mentioned in the past year or long before. It's easy for a New York Islander Fan not living in Nassau to write pay up for a new building but reality is the tax exepmtions/construction bonds or infrastructure all other local teams fans had to pay for to keep their teams.
Fans in Nassau County will now have to do likewise if it comes down to final alternative. That alternative does not guarantee Wang signing a new lease or revenue from a taxpayer funded facility.
I wrote in the last year it's time for Nassau County to pay up like other teams fans had to for their teams. If Kate Murray only wants her suburbia this is the position she has put folks in herself.
I have posted tons of articles on how every other local government had the taxpayers absorb the burden on construction/infrastructure or bonds/exemptions.
Reality is Charles Wang is not paying for a new building that he cannot make any money running plus give out massive front-loaded contracts for hockey players when teams in modern buildings with high ticket prices are bleeding red ink already.
Nothing new today but no doubt New York Islander fans have an interest. The State of the County address date has nothing to do with the conclusion of the New York Islanders season.

As you know, I have not been shy about my plans to develop the area near Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Mitchel Field into a sports-entertainment destination center. For too long, Nassau Coliseum and the property that surrounds it has laid to waste rather than generate revenue for the County that can help hold the line on property taxes.
The aging Coliseum is no longer competitive with other sports complexes and conference centers around the region and nation.
Long Island's only professional sports team, the NY Islanders, have threatened to leave Nassau County in three years if a new Coliseum is not built. To construct a new Coliseum, an investment of nearly $400 million would be necessary. Several options have been explored to keep our Islanders and build a new Nassau Coliseum…
Option one was for a sustainable mixed use development which hasn't proven economically viable at this time.
Option two is a public-private inter-nation partnership with the Shinnecock Nation to develop a gaming casino on the land that surrounds the Nassau Coliseum. This project would include a hotel and conference center, a newly refurbished Nassau Coliseum and restaurants and stores.
Finally, option three is to ask homeowners via referendum whether they wish to fund the construction of a new Coliseum.
Regardless of your preference, we must all agree that the status quo is not the answer. It never is. A project of this magnitude would create thousands of jobs, generate hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue annually and would increase tourism in Nassau County. Best yet, it would help keep our New York Islanders here in Nassau County.
Over the coming months, I will seek public input on these options and work with community leaders to address any and all concerns. While I am excited about the opportunity of developing a sports-entertainment destination center in Nassau County, I am still focused on helping create and retain other jobs throughout all areas of the County.

Congratulations to Al Montoya, he earned a contract based on his strong/consistent play over an extended period. To go to Bridgeport he would now have to clear waivers.
Kevin Poulin, Mikko Koskinen are both signed for next season. Anders Nilsson has to be signed this summer (22nd birthday) or like Stefan Ridderwall will be out of the organization. In short there seems to be no immediate place for advancement and that says nothing over lingering Nabokov waiver claim being tolled or any possible change in Rick DiPietro's status.
Unless a goalie under contract decides to go home next season I do not see any spot for UFA Nate Lawson.
Islanders Website: Report Doug Weight will not play this season with his comments on possible retirement.
NYIFC Comments:
Time will tell regarding what Weight decides, but the center spot here is locked up. He has not proven he can hold up and frankly his resigning was for a second year a mistake that cost the club on the ice.
Mark Katic and Dylan Reese have been recalled from loan from Bridgeport for Jurcia and Gervais both out with injury.
NYIFC Comments:
Fair to write it's going to be very tough for Jack Capuano to build anything with this many injuries mounting up on the blueline in terms of any questions about his future status. To lose MacDonald is a game changer as it was in October, as we go deeper it gets even harder to play at high level the club was for so long.
Fair to write the club could end the season as it did when it fell out of contention. Kovalchuk will play against New York on Wednesday, Parise is still a question mark but practicing.
Defense: Hamonic, Reese, Wishart, Martinek, Katic & Jack Hillen.
Defense injured: Streit, Mottau, Eaton, Jurcina, MacDonald, Gervais.
Islanders website: Had interim head coach Jack Capuano's NHL interview today.

“I would lean more towards retirement than I would playing (again), but by no means have I made that decision,” Weight said. “I don’t want to hang on. I just want to make sure my mind’s right. I feel like that’s my right. I’ve earned it over time, to make sure that’s what I want.”

If only New York was in some kind of realistic playoff contention.
Not a good game at all five on five and Koskinen finally struggled, but sixteen goals in two games, nineteen in three, and three fantastic wins in four days, where they had to work very hard. They just beat a hot, rest team at home and a very good goaltender.
This is not a league where even the best teams play many high scoring games.
That's 2-0 at Buffalo.
Michael Grabner has just been amazing and getting more confident in several area's of the ice, and obviously is making a run at Calder, player of week month, and whatever else is out there, and Okposo is just getting started even with Nielsen unable to finish at even strength. Comeau was not on the list of players practicing Saturday, apparently he was ready and had a nice backhand goal. Tavares another, Moulson looked hurt in second and that could linger. Wishart got his first, Jurcina a big pp goal?
Remember those blog entries on defenders not scoring a while back or five goals on season. MacDonald and Hamonic keep rolling along and improving.
Stick to Nielsen's face no call? MacDonald's play to stop breakaway down 4-2 was robbery.

As for the media side show Mario Lemieux obviously has a selective memory and really did not need to go there and let the league handle the process. Not the first time he has done this when he does not get things his way, and his silence regarding his own players/coaches transgressions to control themselves speak volumes.
Sure Lemieux should stick up for his team, but he wants to call out league, he should face consequences.
Snow for his part stuck up for his team (Al Arbour/Denis Potvin were pleased and they know better than Lemieux) and Garth Snow sounded off like a professional executive, who asked the same questions this blog did, along with Howie Rose about the Pens not controlling their players.
Sure he had a little creative tap-dancing spinning Gillies actions.
Even Mario's former teammate, Rob Brown, had some criticism of Matt Cooke today out of Canadian media here.
Snow should be proud of his players, and respectful of the process with his comments to the public. Charles Wang should not say a word.
New York Hockey getting some media coverage, with friends like Newsday, we need no enemies. Larry Brooks must be very upset the Islanders are getting far more media play, than Cablevision's team to unleash his latest blind-unreasoning assault with no quotes from anyone to support his silly claims, but par for course from him.
Not like Post is covering New York Islander hockey games.
This even forced NY Times, Dave Caldwell, to even include score of Sunday's road win in another rare article.
Islanders website already has post-game up with player comments.
Of course the game now becomes who has the most friends/media of each side defend the other. Hopefully for the New York side, they are done.
Oh well, on to Ottawa and perhaps a player of week for Grabner? He's heading toward the top ten in NHL scoring.

Sure Lemieux should stick up for his team, but he wants to call out league, he should face consequences.
Snow for his part stuck up for his team (Al Arbour/Denis Potvin were pleased and they know better than Lemieux) and Garth Snow sounded off like a professional executive, who asked the same questions this blog did, along with Howie Rose about the Pens not controlling their players.
Sure he had a little creative tap-dancing spinning Gillies actions.
Even Mario's former teammate, Rob Brown, had some criticism of Matt Cooke today out of Canadian media here.
Snow should be proud of his players, and respectful of the process with his comments to the public. Charles Wang should not say a word.
New York Hockey getting some media coverage, with friends like Newsday, we need no enemies. Larry Brooks must be very upset the Islanders are getting far more media play, than Cablevision's team to unleash his latest blind-unreasoning assault with no quotes from anyone to support his silly claims, but par for course from him.
Not like Post is covering New York Islander hockey games.
This even forced NY Times, Dave Caldwell, to even include score of Sunday's road win in another rare article.
Islanders website already has post-game up with player comments.
Of course the game now becomes who has the most friends/media of each side defend the other. Hopefully for the New York side, they are done.
Oh well, on to Ottawa and perhaps a player of week for Grabner? He's heading toward the top ten in NHL scoring.

New York Acquires Al Montoya For Sixth Round Pick |

New York has acquired goaltender Al Montoya from the Phoenix Coyotes, for a 6th round pick in the 2011 draft here and will report to Bridgeport.
Al Montoya has been struggling along statistically in the AHL.
Montoya is a restricted free agent and may well require waivers to be recalled to the NHL.

The standings suggest unless Edmonton wants Montoya, it's not an issue.

Maybe Cablevision has some of those marketing signs for Montoya left over when he was drafted sixth overall?
He is heading for Bridgeport (for whatever reasons he was not San Antonio's starter/injury/beaten out) it should make for fun interviews with Rick DiPietro after they fought if they share a locker room by the end of this season.
Personally, I would go with Koskinen and Lawson regardless. Koskinen is not some eighteen year old prospect, he is twenty two years old and the first goalie taken in his draft class.
