Newsday Islander Insider/Notables

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/14/2008 12:48:00 PM
Newsday: Friday Islander Insider has Mr Logan's feature with comments from Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley about when happened years ago when they could have been drafted by the Islanders along with a few words on the Coliseum along with how good they could have been here.

The Insider also includes head coach Scott Gordon and what he needs to do as a new coach to evaluate the young players beyond statistics which also included Tim Jackman. Mr Bettman discusses the NHL outdoor game with Mr Logan's slant the Islanders were given less consideration despite the commissioner ever saying any such thing.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Oh, the agony of Newsday's coverage.

Greg Logan may be the only man in America who noted the Islanders play Spezza, Heatley and Luongo three games in a row. Last January they traveled from Minnesota to Ottawa so why not do another feature and include Gaborik too? I wonder how many times since 2002 the Islanders have played Florida-Atlanta-Ottawa in some combination of games?

Nothing like Greg Logan to come along and make our fans feel so good about things they read his work and rush right out to purchase tickets. They do not even pull this
up in Toronto on the club going back to 2001-02 but of course this is about keeping perception about the club as negative as possible, not to throw in at the end of the article they are finally dedicated to a youth movement.

We know the Newsday script well by now. Mr Herrmann follows up with future franchise viability/attendance update # whatever, Neil Best comes in with the Msg
limited-controlled ratings. Finally the comedy club in Mr Rieber-Baumbach take a few parting shots at something/anything about the team to make whatever fans left just not even bother anymore.

Newsday is just wonderful for Islander attendance and building their profile in the NHL community.

Other markets do not have to put up with this much less ones with limited coverage space that never talks to Radek Martinek who then become under-rated in NHL circles
along with any good story about this franchise.

Ottawa and Carolina writers did some heavy lobbying for Sutter and Shannon after the hits they absorbed from Islander players. When was the last time this beat writer did any lobbying when an Islander took a questionable hit?

Newsday did not even mention Streit not being listed on the All-Star ballot. In Boston the writers were very critical for Tim Thomas omission again.

Our beat writer loves our team so much he goes out and asks players on other teams about the Coliseum's condition where Heatley did not take the bait while Spezza saw where the questions were going and backtracked taking about winning is what players look for over any facility.

I'm sure a few folks are already saying to themselves Greg Logan is absolutely right and here I go again picking on him.

Not true.

Newsday's staff did not pull this on the Rangers when they lost for seven years in a row despite all the money they threw away, meanwhile they have two playoff wins since 1997 and you never read a negative word about them.

You think Alan Hahn today is doing these kinds of features on the Knicks for their fans where they go over the history of Isiah Thomas bad moves or the football writer is bashing the Jets for all their years of struggles?

Only the New York Islanders folks.

You think George Richards in Florida slams the Panthers like this or hit the fans over the head with their failures to this degree since they last made the playoffs or bring up Luongo or Olli Jokinen being traded away for very little to this degree?

Funny but I do not see Mr Zipay talking about how the Garden is older than the Nassau Coliseum and very much a dump when it's time to talk to free agents as the front-loaded contracts are ignored by Newsday.

As for where the franchise would have been with those players last I looked Heatley, Luongo changed clubs since they were drafted while Spezza for his talent is getting a lot of criticism for his play the last few years. The Senators had a lot of infighting last spring and are not looking very good now.

Atlanta, Florida did not do a lot of winning with those players and the Islanders had missed the playoffs seven years in a row before a decision needed to be made about drafting them or improving immediately.

The agony of what might have been also is a franchise that may not have made the
playoffs at all in fifteen years as opposed to four times in six years which Mr Logan would not touch along with the injury numbers which had a lot to do with last years final standings and this seasons start. Those players he called the core could easily have left for free agency by now with little or no return.

But why write about any of that when it does not stir up the fans?

This is not about telling the teams story or about today's youth, the current gm or coach and what they have been trying to do despite the teaser.

It's about running down a franchise to upset the remaining fans in an attempt to simply hope more people tune out. Mr Logan even spun perception on Gary Bettman that the Islanders were not seriously considered for an outdoor game when the commissioner did not go there at all. How many times did Mr Botta tell us the Islanders initiated the process years ago and was personally involved in the talks?

Did Mr Logan write this to discuss the youth movement too?

What's priceless is Mr Logan actually thinks this is why GM Garth Snow and coach Scott Gordon are dedicated to the development of the franchise's latest first-round picks.

Who is to say whether the Islanders would be any less desiccated to developing youth now regardless of what happened in the past? A lot of winning and losing clubs in this league are dedicated to their youth and put a lot of young players in their lineup.

Enough folks have talked about the age of the current roster too.

Bottom line I do not need fluff articles from the beat writer but this kind of constant beat down of the club is just not called for. None of this was to barely make a point the Islanders are finally heading in the right direction with youth.

Anyone wonder why the team does not want to talk with Newsday about injuries and the fans are staying away? Newsday's coverage sure does not help attendance despite the revenue given for advertising.

Newsday: Mr Logan in the Islanders Newsday blog finally gave Joey MacDonald a few words of praise along with the goaltenders comments.

Tsn.ca: Reports the Tampa Bay Lightning fired Barry Melrose on Friday with comments from new gm Brian Lawton after the new owners in October said his job was safe and hired Rick Tocchet as their new head coach.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Fear not folks, the hockey media in the US will not give them the well deserved verbal beating the Islanders receive in the national media for things Charles Wang has not come close to on his worst day. Should be interesting if the Espn crew step up and defend Melrose now who did inherit a 30th place club with a lot of flaws all the moves did not correct.

Quick Hit:
No criticism of Islander President Chris Dey because he has his hands completely tied but reading the release of the agreement of a pregame with Msg President's comments was a joke about the working relationship with our team given preseason games could not be aired live on the internet.

Does the pregame include twenty minutes of High School Programming like the new Saturday format?

Islander News Articles 6/25

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/25/2008 03:53:00 AM
Minnesota Daily: Brian Deutsch writes how Islander prospect Aaron Ness will fit on the Gophers this fall is one of the biggest mysteries in college hockey right now, along with the writer including Ness did not have much to say or was happy about not being drafted in the first round Saturday.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Should be interesting if Ness follows through on his comment he will come up to the Islanders when they think he is ready. Seems as though Aaron Ness is giving early notice to Don Lucia that the NHL is the priority for him.

Sarnia Observer: Dave Borody reports Jon Sim, former Islander Alan Letang, Justin DiBenedetto, Matt Martin, Sound Tigers Jamie Fraser will participate in the annual Sarnia Sting Golf Tournament for Sunshine, presented by Bell and Labatt, July 24 at Huron Oaks Golf Club.

NY Times: Michael Brick had former Islander Brent Hughes comments about the Austin Ice Bats club he coached twice ceasing operations along with the promotion guaranteed fight night for it's fans.

Toronto Sun: Lance Hornsby reports the Isles could have interest in waived forward Kyle Wellwood and that Andrew Raycoft, & Scott Clemmenson were also placed on waivers along with Darcy Tucker being bought out of the final three years of his contract by Toronto as of Wednesday.

Sportsnet.ca: Chris Nichols does a fantasy breakdown of the top picks in the NHL with a profile Islanders selection Josh Bailey.

Los Angeles: Eric Stephens reports on Ducks owner Henry Samueli was suspended indefinitely by the NHL for his role in an alleged stock option scheme but he will remain an the owners and that it will be business as usual for the most part but they won't be involved with the team until an August 18th hearing.

Nashvill Tennessean: Brad Schrade has more on Predators investor William Del Biaggio entering bankruptcy court as he lists his share in the Predators as his top asset showing he owes creditors $88.4 million but that the Nashville-based investors that makes up the other owners, led by former medical waste company owner David Freeman say this will not effect operations.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I always find it kind of sad when Gary Bettman gets the blame for situations like this where people buy sports teams or attempt to purchase teams with no revenue to do so but try anyway and are good at hiding their trail for a while. The Ducks situtation is obviously different from Nashville.

Of course it's easy to get annoyed at Bettman when a con-man like John Spano surfaced and defrauded many but he tried to purchase a lot of teams before the Islanders so they did have plenty of opportunity to investitage him in advance. You can only put so many safeguards into a system in the end.

Also despite some perception Bettman is an elected king with authority beyond anyone else he answers to the others owners and what the decide is what he has to do in most instances.

That's why there are so many Board of Governors meetings.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio in his blog is already hoping to get some RFA answers for the deadline which is today.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
This is what I expect Greg Logan to be promising for Islander fans in Newsday's blog today.

Espn.com: Scott Burnside has the new Lightning owners along with new coach Barry Melrose and adds if the NHL had more owners like that, and fewer under investigation, the league would be a much more happening place.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
To be fair here Mr Burnside does talk about the potential downside of hiring the now former Espn announcer nor does he hide Melrose past coaching record. Having written that when Charles Wang took those kinds of chances writers like Mr Burnside were not this open-minded with the commentary.

Funny how in this article the new Bolt ownership is also going all out to copy Mr Wang in giving out a huge long-term contract off the bat.

Early Evening Monday Isles Update

New York Islander Fan Central | 6/23/2008 05:44:00 PM
Islanders website: Website/Publications Coordinator Jason Lockhart looks at the Sarnia connection with Isles OHL area scout Tim MacLean, 2008 picks Justin DiBenedetto, Matt Martin along with comments from 2007Islander selection Mark Katic.

SI.com: Adam Muir in the NHL draft winners and losers article has the Islanders in the honorable mention department for making hay with potential first-rounders Corey Trivino, Aaron Ness, Jyri Niemi and Kirill Petrov on Saturday.

Toronto was hit was a loser tag because they gave up draft picks in a skill draft for a defensive-defenseman in the top five?

THN.com: Brian Costello of THN also was very critical of Cliff Fletcher for giving up prospect depth.

Montreal Gazette: Has Mark Renaud, father of former Spitfires captain Mickey Renaud comments regarding the Islanders selecting Josh Bailey along with the Spitfires' centre statement he dedicated his selection in Renaud's honour.

Colmbus Dispatch: Michael Arace reports Jacket fans are not too happy with the overall draft, that Filatov was another third-liner and another mercurial Russian dangler combined with asking who's drafting Russians. For the sake of balance he includes Filatov looks a lot like Zherdev -- but without the baggage, and with an apparently clear path to North America.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I guess we shall see. Means nothing until they hit the ice at this level and then we get a good idea as time passes.

Quick hit:
Espn/several outlets report Barry Melrose will be officially announced as new coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.

Ray Emery of the Senators has been bought out after clearing waivers. Washington Capitals Ben Clymer, Carolina Hurricanes, Jeff Hamilton (former Islander) and David Tanabe have been placed on waivers.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Carolina seemingly has the former Islander-Sound Tiger on waivers every other week.

NYI Fan Central Blog Notables:
New York Islander Fan Central does not acknowledge amateur/guest fan writers as acredited professional writers regardless of their content in the main news section of this blog which is why something written on the club in Newsday late monday was not included here.

For what the Isles pay Newsday for advertising they deserve a professional writer at the very least.

A little surprised on the poll for the Islanders draft given the reaction on Friday. I gave the Isles overall a C.

Moved Draft center just above prospect center, will be adding in profiles of the
2008 draft class to prospect section as made available.

I think I did all I could do to get my message out here on the Islanders playing in the outdoor game and have now removed the links to contact Mayor Bloomberg, anyone
wants the link again please contract me privately.

I'm considering another live interactive blog for July 1st given the big success of the draft chats both days last weekend. I need to decide on a time where its possible but it's possible nothing could happen regarding our team.

Of course suggestions regarding that would be helpful.

Sound Tigers lose, Wednesday Notables

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/07/2007 01:14:00 PM

AHL.com Reported the Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost 3-2 in a Wednesday matinee at Harbor Yard again against Worchester Sharks (San Jose affiliate) where they again lost with a lead going into the third period. Mike Morrison started and made twenty three saves. Joe Rullier was suspended two games, Darryl Bootland had family business and did not play in this game. Scott Burt, who was called up from Utah was a plus one.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio blogged about today's loss.

Islanders Website: Announced Bill Guerin and Rick DiPietro are on the all-star ballot. The games will be Sunday, January 27th in Atlanta.

Canadian Press: Barry Melrose apologized after some inappropriate comments about the area surrounding the new Prudential Center in Newark that had the major of the city and many citizens upset. Espn says it will not discipline Melrose.

"I was trying to be funny and I'm sorry it didn't come through that way," he said by phone from St. Louis. "No excuse. When I talk I don't want to offend anybody. I love hockey and I want Newark to be a success. I certainly never wanted to hurt the feelings of the people of Newark or the people of New Jersey. There was no malice on my part."

"Barry addressed it and that was the important thing," Krulewitz said. "He obviously was remorseful and we feel it's in every body's best interests to put it behind us."

NYI Fan Central Comments:
What can I add? He said something inappropriate and gave a public apology. Good thing it's hockey or it would have had career ramifications for Melrose and been a higher profile story. Fair to say he just lost any chance at a job coaching the Devils in the future and if Espn ever does get back rights to games the people at Espn will likely remember it when considering who they will hire.

The Star:Kevin McGran reports former Islander Jason Blake is clicking with Mats Sundin at even strength and has fourteen assist but only two goals but they have no pp chemistry and are being broken up. Blake has the worst shooting percentage for anyone with a goal on the Leafs.

Tsn.ca Darren Drager reports Eric Lindros is expected to announce his retirement at age 34 on Thursday.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Seems like Lindros has been in retirement since Scott Stevens hit him. After going through the motions for years and more injuries the end is finally here. The question at this point is does anyone really care?

Albany Times Union: Pete Dougherty has a feature on Brandon Nolan who is now in the Carolina Hurricanes organization and Ted Nolan.
