Matt Martin Traded Back To New York For McAdam

New York Islander Fan Central | 7/03/2018 03:14:00 PM

NYIFC Comments: I think for now on 7/3, we have to take a step back, and see what this all translates to by opening night which is a long-way off. The changes are going to continue. Gibson was traded by one Lamoriello, and was just given two years by another. Lamoriello signed Martin, and traded for him, and brought down the forward from the Leafs. Sure it makes some fans happy bringing home Martin, who just sat on the sidelines, but things don't happen here for those reasons.

New York Notables

New York Islander Fan Central | 9/23/2014 08:11:00 AM
Not much to write about hockey, double-header preseason games with a team getting on a plane that same morning are almost unheard of much less playing one of those games that afternoon.

The dominating double-header sweep of Ottawa on 9/29/13 ultimately proved nothing to close the 2013-14 preseason. Nice to win games, and no doubt Jack Skille finding an open net thanks to Cizikas, Colleberg, Nelson, Bailey, and Grabovski getting some goals sure do not hurt their confidence.

I'm warming up to the idea of Josh Bailey (who was the playoff left wing with Tavares/Boyes) becoming the first line left wing but it has to be the final position change, who knows if it's a showcase or a one game thing?

Blake Comeau was a nice kid who kept changing positions for Scott Gordon, he became a perimeter player who could not score. A year ago Bailey said he's fine playing anywhere, and that he could make the switch to the right wing. I wrote back then it's on him.

Bergenheim was asked to change positions he flat out said no.

History says you keep changing someone's position all you end up with is a confused player.
********************************
So where does John Tavares not play the Nassau Coliseum or Barclay's center because the core players making the club will be placed together toward the end of the preseason?

Likely both, but if I'm coaching the Barclay's center ice is not where I want Tavares playing coming off a serious knee injury.

There are about twenty players who did not travel Monday, who no doubt would like to dress for a game.  (Matt Martin)

After Friday there are three off days.
Bridgeport has not announced an AHL preseason game.
********************************
Peter Karmanos seems to agree with Charles Wang's way of selling, and is looking into a sale of the Hurricanes. His comments about Forbes not being credible were of course spot-on as to the value of franchises considering a member of their board is part of the group giving Wang substantially more.

******************************

I read Wang's legal response to Barroway. So on one hand Barroway writes in his complaint he felt he had an agreement 3/10/14 but in another letter much later he acknowledges Wang does not have to sell him the team?

These are all Mr Barroway's own written words contradicting himself.

So Bruce Ratner said in January 2014 he was submitting his zoning plan to the TOH shortly, and now he's waiting until the end of the year, knowing he said he needs IDA financing to do this project?

Is he expecting Murray approval in less than seven months for anything?

Knowing Kate Murray's history, will she stall this long enough to force Ratner to walk away from the project which he could do at any time? If Murray wants Dolan's Msg plan, and his Newspaper creates a referendum-like circus to stall things that is exactly what will happen.

And Dolan/Msg did a fantastic job with the Los Angeles Forum.

Ratner a year ago put on a dazzling show for the legislature and got a 19-0 vote. He needed over a year to submit plans for a building permit for a bowling alley, restaurants that are only a small footprint around the Coliseum that should not be an issue in Murray's 2010 zoning?

He must have a clue about Kate Murray's history, why did he not have his plans ready for submission on the first day he could submit them so he could ride that support to easy zoning approval?

This is the man who is somehow going to get the NHL/Dolan in that order approve the New York Islanders having two home NHL facilities for regular season games, and somehow get Wang/successors to break the lease in Bridgeport?

Howard Saffan said his Sound Tigers claims were irresponsible at the time.  I have seen these long periods of silence/delays forever and not once has something worked out whether it be the Coliseum or the ownerships. It falls apart.

I don't know. Ratner's on Bloomberg News this week doing his video's talking football, finance. His pre-assembled housing units literally attached to Barclay's center is not only shutdown with lawsuits, but perhaps structurally flawed while it sits ten stories high?

New York Resigns Matt Martin To Four Year Extension

New York Islander Fan Central | 9/16/2012 12:20:00 PM |
Islanders website: Reported the club came to terms with Matt Martin on a four year extension before the lockout began.

NYIFC Comments:
Checked last night up until around 10pm, great to see a deal done for the longer term. Will be interesting to see if there is any chance he returns to Bridgeport to continue playing.

Both Matt Martin/Travis Hamonic were selected in the 2008 draft, both have similar games played in NHL 135/153, however Matt Martin is twenty three, as opposed to Hamonic age twenty two.

Islanders Website: Also had a release for the fans as the lockout officially has begun.

New York Players Clear NHL Waivers

New York Islander Fan Central | 9/15/2012 01:19:00 PM |
SoundTigers website: Report Sean Backman, Colin McDonald and Matt Watkins and defensemen Nathan McIver and Ty Wishart have all cleared waivers and have been assigned to the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

NYIFC Comments:
Francois Beauchemin was placed on waivers by Montreal Canadiens and claimed by Columbus 9/15/2004.

Unlikely under today's circumstances, however it's not impossible for the New York Islanders to put in a waiver claim on a player they would like, the final standings still determining order of claims.

Of course this could lead to some friction with another organization.

Matt Martin:
As for Matt Martin, the teams training camp opening date of 9/21 could still mean a season ending lockout for him regardless of a 9/16 NHL lockout based on team policy.

Matt Martin was qualified, he did not accept his ten percent raise per the current CBA.

It's uncharted waters for management, however New York Islander internal team policy is not CBA related in any way.

To the best of my knowledge a lockout means no business can be announced, even a Matt Martin contract signing later this week starting 9/16 midnight.

Notables:
As of Sunday the only ones hurt to this point will be the prospects, who would have been part of the NHL teams pre-camp, likely participating in some early preseason games.

Now they hang around waiting for AHL camps to open on 9/28, at a point cuts would have been made.

The real date the damage begins would be the opening for NHL team camps which for New York is still six days away.

Donald Fehr appears to be 0-1 based on Quebec labor board.

7/15 Decision Day For Martin, Wishart, Koskinen

New York Islander Fan Central | 7/11/2012 12:51:00 PM
7/15 is the day qualifying offers expire for these players. (along with Sean Backman)

The Islanders retain the rights to these players, they can keep negotiating because they qualified them, however this would mean those players do not simply want the standard raise per CBA which is what a qualifying offer means.

Matt Martin does not accept his raise by 7/15 it could get interesting or one (perhaps both) sides want a longer term contract.

Mikko Koskinen played in Europe last season, however he's New York Islander property, and the first goaltender selected in his draft, who's situation is unchanged with four other goaltenders under contract.

It's notable Garth Snow retains Ty Wishart, but never mentions him in discussing defenders who need to make this team, but again Snow offered him a contract/raise with qualifying offer.

Any player accepts their qualifying offer by 7/15 that means they are signed.

Charles Wang's 4/1 Interview In Ottawa Pregame

New York Islander Fan Central | 4/01/2012 03:14:00 PM
Comments on the loss to Ottawa are on twitter.

Our earlier summary via twitter comments on Charles Wang's Interview out of context

NYIFC Comments:
Only so much time we can wait for the Isles website via Msg to make this available.

For those looking for inconsistency from the owner, the GM spoke with Gary Bettman on  Feb 2nd, and made clear at that time he was satisfied with Jack Capuano as his coach with the club two games under five hundred.

Matt Martin has won the Bob Nystrom award.

New York's Game Plan Moving Forward In Free Agency:

New York Islander Fan Central | 7/04/2011 03:18:00 AM

The deadline for players filing arbitration is 7/5 at 5pm EST. Blake Comeau will be the player to watch here, we could find out here if Haley/others accept their qualifying offers.

Updated:
Comeau has filed for salary arbitration.

Updated 7/5:
Islanders website: announced today they have agreed to terms with center Trevor Frischmon on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) contract.

Colorado Springs Gazette: June 30th had his comments about playing in the NHL and why he was considering moving on from Columbus.
****************************
The best move so far by the New York Islanders is the one they have not made.

Still, Garth Snow has spots to be filled/key players to be signed/re-signed.

Forwards:
Given the forward prospects that have left Bridgeport, the current open roster spots, with the possible chance of Blake Comeau in a year going UFA, Snow should be working hard to sign left wing Jason Gregoire.

Grand Forks Herald: who broke Gregoire's leaving school reported he was at the draft, and interviewed with nine teams.

Gregoire is not Blake Wheeler, even if he used his clause to explore UFA, but he is a talented prospect with scoring ability.

If Gregiore signed here and did well in camp, it could open the roster for a possible Comeau trade (if he cannot be signed) without some of the contracts comparable left wingers were given on 7/1.

Unless Snow and his staff have targeted another Matt Moulson or P.A Parenteau for Bridgeport, this is the best move to supplement his AHL prospect base after losing Figren, Joensuu.....likely Tomas Marcinko, unless he makes the NHL per his new contract.

Another thing to consider is before Matt Martin uses up his NHL waiver eligibility (160 games) it would be only prudent to seriously consider him returning to Bridgeport and rediscovering his offensive game on the top lines, while Marcinko receives a full look here, who has been signed.

Martin was not as visible as he was offensively the previous year (granted a five game sample) on a regular basis, perhaps it being on the fourth line/perhaps not?

Bottom line here, the Islanders second/third round picks in 2006 are gone, one of the fourth rounders from that draft is signed to play only in the NHL or Europe.

Martin needs to play more, Gregiore would be a good player to have in your system, Marcinko should get an NHL chance before departing likely for good.

Backline:
This team has Eaton, Mottau, Jurcina signed for next season, they CANNOT afford another middle of the road veteran blue-liner like McCabe, Kaberle ect taking a spot in this lineup. Their limited offensive/defensive ability, with declining skills makes that a non-starter at this point in their careers.

The players in Bridgeport are better potential options, especially Calvin deHaan, perhaps Wishart and Katic right now.

Katic's speed/skill flat out impressed me.....a lot.

If Snow wants to trade Eaton, Mottau or Jurcina, then sign McCabe or Kaberle that's acceptable, not before.

There are twenty eight other teams interested in trading for Keith Yandle, it's not happening unless he's signed long-term in advance and Garth Snow includes a top prospect, or a top draft choice.

You cannot trade for Yandle as a rental, Phoenix needs to win immediately so someone will purchase the club and keep it in Arizona. Don Maloney is likely not going to be retained if the franchise is moved, so his personal best short-term bet is Yandle.

Goaltender:
No one is trading a top defender for Nabokov, who's 500k right now looks expensive compared to what Vokoun got, but a steal compared to what so many others received.

What's Next:
For the moment getting contracts done with Josh Bailey, Blake Comeau, perhaps Frans Nielsen beyond one year, along with the move stated above, should be the priority.

If something cannot get done with Nielsen or Comeau, you can include both in a trade for a quality defender. Nielsen's trade value may never be higher, if he has another year struggling on offense it will decline.

No law Tavares-Strome-Bailey cannot be your three centers by fall 2012.

The Dany Heatley NHL tour has now stopped in Minnesota for Martin Havlat here in a late Sunday trade.

From The Hypocrisy/Double Standard Or Selective Amnesia Department:
NY Daily News: decided on an unnamed editorial blasting the Coliseum project 7/4 that is so pathetic, it ignores the same NY Daily News article Yankee Stadium and Citi Field are the Houses That You Built from January of 2009.

NYIFC Comments:
Would not shock me at all if Cablevision picked up the phone and asked for a negative editorial as the LIBN did on June 30th displaying some very selective amnesia regarding other local teams.

Suspensions Announced: Gillies Nine, Martin Four, Godard Ten

New York Islander Fan Central | 2/12/2011 11:58:00 PM

NHL.com: Reports Penguins enforcer Eric Godard has been suspended 10 games, while the Isles' Trevor Gillies has been suspended for nine games and the Isles' Matt Martin for four games. There is also a $100,000 fine for the Islanders.

NYIFC Comments:
About what I expected, apparently the NHL wanted to send a financial message to the Islanders, which will likely be reduced quietly upon appeal later. Gillies did not help his cause standing off ice, jawing at the player he hit. Martin did not merit four games for not hitting someone with a punch after what Jordan Staal got a complete pass for on 2/1.

Apparently, Dan Bylsma escaped the supposed mandatory penalty for his player leaving the bench, begging the question who will be next now that this dangerous precedent has been allowed to go by without the coach being held accountable?

Colin Campbell's comments/explanation:

"The actions by the Islanders' Gillies and Martin were deliberate attempts to injure by delivering blows to the head of players who were unsuspecting and unable to defend themselves," Campbell said in a statement issued by the NHL. "The message should be clear to all players: targeting the head of an opponent by whatever means will be dealt with by suspension.

"With respect to the Godard suspension, there can be no circumstance that allows for a player to leave his bench for the purpose of coming to the aid of a teammate."

The Islanders were also fined $100,000.

"The Islanders also must bear some responsibility for their failure to control their players," Campbell added.

NYIFC Comments:
Like when Mike Mottau hit Frans Nielsen in his head/neck, or the countless other head-shots we see Campbell simply ignore where a players head is targeted?

Was Pittsburgh controlling their players properly with Johnson at center ice again while Koskinen was in his net?

Dan Bylsma's player left his team's bench, he did not control his player, he should be accountable along with the Pens organization. I like Godard same as when he played here and was thrilled for Bylsma when he got Pens job and won cup.

I know it's not an easy job, but Colin Campbell has made one thing clear to virtually everyone over the years, what he says vs what he does are two different things.

Rules are supposed to be same rules for everyone.
