Halak Reports To Bridgeport

New York Places Halak On Waivers (Cleared 12/31) Snow Comments

New York Islander Fan Central | 12/30/2016 06:14:00 PM |

Islanders website: Snow had some additional comments on Halak/goaltending situation.

NYIFC Comments:
Halak is the best goaltender in the organization by a mile. Greiss despite his strong play is a career backup, and Berube was risked to waivers for Jonas Enroth, who is also now on another NHL team.

Halak came to New York in August for a clinic in Long Island City, went to the World Cup Of Hockey, and was the tournaments true MVP, who almost carried them to a title, he was dominating.

He came to what was left of Islander training camp (with team Europe backup, Greiss) at that level.

The issue should have been decided at that point with Berube going on waivers to play in Bridgeport, despite Gibson, Williams, McAdam signed there.

Sorry, but Capuano went well past his not commenting on goaltender mantra vs Wild to throw Halak under the bus. He won the five of six games, and beat Pittsburgh, Rangers, Washington, with solid goaltending  facing 30-40 shots all season on average  in front of a team that cannot play in the third period without giving up goals or a push from the opposition.

Forgive me for laughing but before the Caps win Monday, Halak, sat for thirteen days, he's not going to get to any level sitting.

On the flip side management had every right after Halak's injuries/surgery to give Berube NHL money, and have insurance in case he got hurt again in a career where he has not proven durable or has been traded at times he was starting/winning. Berube knew exactly what he signed up for here (NHL money-one way contract) and could have refused to sign, to go earn AHL money elsewhere.

Sorry, but no good answer here. Berube is not Martin Jones in terms of prospect potential, and needed more work when the Kings risked waivers, and now needs much more at AHL level. Kevin Poulin was claimed by Tampa, but already signed here so it was not like Snow went looking to upgrade his backup goalie spot.

Not sure if another team claims Halak, given his cap-hit, and another year on contract, which means McAdam with his 7-0 start, Williams go back to Missouri, or Chris Gibson leaves when he's finally healthy.

Halak's the New York Islanders best goaltender, the shots against this team is facing is not on the goaltending, and sure Halak struggled vs the Wild, but enough to be placed on waivers after sitting for 13 days (before beating Caps) splitting the net with two other goaltenders? No.

6/6/16 Halak Update

Halak Out At Least Six Weeks

New York Islander Fan Central | 3/09/2016 05:22:00 PM |
It's Greiss, Berube with three games of NHL experience, and Christopher Gibson/Stephon Williams trying to get New York/Bridgeport in the playoffs.

Mikko Koskinen signed a two year contract 5/1/15 in KHL.

Given the Islanders schedule ahead, how exhausted this team must be already after seven straight road games with only Kevin Czuczman, Jesse Graham, Loic Leduc (red shirt at practice) and Matt Finn available on defense with NHL contracts on defense, out for weeks (Mayfield, Burroughs, Pelech) it's unlikely there is any path here to a playoff spot or any run if they qualify.

Greiss will have to become a full time #1/play as such. It's not impossible the 18-6-3 Greiss, can outplay the 18-13-4 Halak, he has the better gaa/save percentage, but career trends matter.

This schedule/lack of rest will likely only lead to more injuries.

No defenders need to be signed in organization who have been drafted so far from college.

No Justin Schultz, Kevin Czuczman, or Jack Hillen options coming from college ranks or announced around the NHL.

At Toronto, at Boston, Florida, at Pittsburgh, at Nashville, at Dallas, Philadelphia, Ottawa, at Tampa, at Carolina, Carolina, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Tampa, at Washington, at Rangers, Buffalo, Philadelphia.

Two day breaks? Two.

Flyers, Carolina (despite selling) even Devils (without Schneider/Camalleri) are not going away.

They are doing more than I expected to scratch out ugly wins, it will have to continue somehow.

New York Plays Championship Level Hockey, Halak Sets Modern Era Win Record

Thrilled for the franchise & congratulations to Jarolsav Halak.

Such a different era/league from when Smitty set the record without overtime & shootouts, but great to see.

As for the rest, at some point they have to find something to get the top players carrying their share of games, but what I watched in Ottawa was perfect & how you win championships as a team.

Beyond that the last entry still applies, keep learning to win regardless who dresses.

Injuries are a fact of life in this league and especially with this franchise, which has been more the rule than the exception.

It feels like how they won a lot of games down the stretch last season despite all the injuries regardless who dressed. Sure they have had some puck-luck including the cross-bar at the end of the game, last season all of it went against them with leads late, and it decided the season.

St Louis, Minnesota, Chicago, it's only going to get tougher schedule-wise.
Keep banking points, avoid regulation losses.

This season's just getting started. My guess is it takes 15-17 over five hundred just for the eighth seed like many years in the western conference, sixteen teams, eight spots.

Halak Agrees to Four-Year Deal/NY Keeping 2014 First Rounder

New York Islander Fan Central | 5/22/2014 04:31:00 PM | |

“I’m thrilled,” Halak said. “It’s a big opportunity for me. It’s a young team. There are some really good hockey players on the team and that was the biggest factor. Plus I know Lubomir Visnovsky. He’s a really good guy and a good friend of mine.”

“We’re excited to have Jaro join the organization,” Snow said. “He’s someone we targeted when the season ended and we’re happy he’s made this commitment as we continue to make our team stronger this offseason.”

“I’m 29-years-old and I know what it takes to be a number one,” Halak said. “I want to prove myself to everyone that I can be a number one.”

Halak's contract with Islanders was backloaded:

For those wondering these were the terms of his last deal in 2010 for 15M:
 $3.75M average cap hit. $2.75 M next season, $3.50 M in 11-12, $4.25 M in 12-13 and $4.50 M in 13-14.

NYIFC Comments:
I'm a little surprised Halak did not test the market enterting UFA for the first time at age twenty eight, expecting bigger dollars/term, however you look at the thirty teams/spots available, Ryan Miller hitting the market (with others) & it was possible he would not have seen a better deal.

He got some term/moderate raise.

This is also a goalie who's been traded by a lot of teams, who was not rewarded by St Louis, or retained by Washington, so seeing someone wanting him could also have be a factor.

Reasonable signing price, good work by management on this one. New York has it's starting goalie.

NYIFC Comments:
The likely result, but there goes any chance at participating in a possible future league wide lottery for a generational talent. Of course the rules for 2015 have not been changed yet in terms of the NHL lottery where 30 teams would get such an opportunity so you play by the current rules.

New York Trade for UFA G Jaroslav Halak

New York Islander Fan Central | 5/01/2014 02:08:00 PM |

NYIFC Comments:
Halak joins his fourth team in 63 days. There was a significant dispute with the former Caps managment where his agent got involved here.

Halak's unrestricted in July. Basically Isles traded 4th to negotiate with an UFA, same as Ehrhoff or when Mark Streit was traded to Philadelphia.

If he does not want to sign here, the 4th was traded for nothing unless Snow trades him as fast as he traded Ehrhoff.

Expect a very quick signng or trade (Snow can get his pick back) to a team his agent does wish to negotiate/sign with.

Snow likely has his contract offer ready, I expect this will be decided in a matter of a days either way.

This is also a player who's traded to upgrade the goaltending whether it be Montreal or St Louis, by process of elimination of teams with starting goaltenders there is an above chance at signing this player.
