Newsday: Greg Logan's article is on defenseman Mark Streit with Scott Gordon's comments he should be given Norris Trophy consideration as the defender talks about what it would be like to return to Montreal as an All-Star.
Mr Logan also has Doug Weight's comment about maybe being named to the all-star roster but is also excited for Streit to be selected.
NYI Fan Central Comments: It a perfect world both would be going, it may well come down to who is selected from other teams at other positions. I do not see two Islanders selected but if I had to pick one Streit leads NHL defenders in scoring and is playing close to twenty five minutes and doing an excellent job on defense.
He absolutely deserves consideration for the Norris if things continue this way for the remainder of the season.
Newsday: Mark Herrmann had a lot of speculation on the Islanders all-star where he felt Mark Streit will be selected but Doug Weight should also be an all-star and credits him for wanting to stay here and how he felt the club cannot give up on the season. Mr Herrmann also endorsed Richard Park for being a pick because he has been the best overall two-way player.
Buffalo News: Mike Harrington reports in Buffalo's win against Jarkko Ruutu bit the gloved right thumb of Buffalo enforcer Andrew Peters — yes, bit — during a scrum near the teams’ benches with 6:47 left in the first period Tuesday in HSBC Arena.
NYI Fan Central Comments: Ruutu was the player Chris Simon kicked for the suspension last December. It will be interesting to see where this goes. Considering what Sidney Crosby got away with recently clearly NHL discipline and it's enforcements has a lot of double-standards in the judgements.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has comments from Andrew MacDonald & Mike Iggulden for being named to the Canadian all-stars with head coach Jack Capuano.
Ct Post: Mr Fornabaio previews tonights game against Houston at Harbor Yard.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio in the Sound Tigers blog has the selections for Canadian All-Stars.
NYI Fan Central Comments: With Kurtis McLean not selected, I'm not sure Jack Hillen or Trevor Smith will make the cut for team USA, I would guess Nate Lawson does not have enough games but we'll see Wednesday.
Our Sports Central.com: Reports Long Island product Vladimir Nikiforov has been recalled to the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers after being named to the ECHL all-stars last weel.
Newsday/AP: Has a recap from AP that list New York plays in Carolina on Monday, New York plays in Florida 10/6.
NYI Fan Central Comments: If a actual game article is written the AP article link is usually replaced by the beatwriter article.
Boston Globe: Julian Benbow had Bruins coach Claude Julien's comments that Scott Gordon will make the Islanders competitive and the he's paid his dues and being rewarded for it.
Newsday: Cablevison's preview of New York hockey has the New York Islanders going one for one with the Cablevison owned team in a publication that should be all New York Islanders given the city coverage disparity, but I digress.
Most of this was put together during the week at practice or from Moncton.
Newsday: Mr Logan's first article is on the blend of old players and youth that figures out on paper this is still very much a veteran roster with nine key players ranging in age from thirty one to thirty seven. Bill Guerin feels the team is " way ahead " with comparisons to where they were last season and this club could go further than some teams he was on in Edmonton that had success. Brendan Witt cites the age of the veterans but praises Scott Gordon's system while the coach was " cautiously optimistic " but credits his players for being able to do things he was not sure they could or would want to do.
Newsday: Mark Herrmann has Bill Guerin and Doug Weight's comments (among other NHL players) about how the game has changed since the lockout ended.
Newsday: Arthur Staple's article is on the young players and what they have to do for New York to be in the playoff mix with Guerin, Gordon, Tambellini, Comeau, Nielsen and Okposo commenting about the clubs chances, what they can do and how they have gotten to this point in their careers.
Newsday: Greg Logan has his keys to the season which also included writing it was a country-club atmosphere under Ted Nolan which seems unfair given his absence and that management has never publicly been quoted as saying this along with DiPietro's health, powerplay, Gordon, older players among other keys with team statistical background and roster/schedule notables.
Newsday: Mr Logan's final preview article had an in-depth interview with defenseman Mark Streit who talks about the differences in Guy Carbonneau's defense-first system vs what Scott Gordon wants his defense to do as Streit again talks like a player who has a very good knowledge about how to create a quality shot and set up a player Mr Logan felt Marc Andre Bergeron did not have the ability to do.
Newsday: Johnette Howard's article is the lemon in the bunch that tried to compare the Islanders to teams in other sports never in the playoffs despite them being in a playoff spot four of the last six years which reflects how rarely she covers hockey these days. The rest was her opinion the prospects are not very good nor will any quality players sign here despite how quickly Martinek, Witt, Hunter resigned.
NYI Fan Central Comments: All in all Mr Logan obviously had the best information, did the best job and should being the club beatwriter. His interviews with the prospects, Guerin and especially Streit were outstanding and the new defender (as in his interview during the summer) sounds like a very smart hockey player who is like having another coach on the ice.
Okposo sounds like a young man who is driven to win now and help carry this team.
The time for talking is almost over, we will soon see who walks the walk in the games when they matter and hopefully Johnette Howard can find something baseball related to cover. Katie Strang should have gotten that feature based on how many times she picked up coverage in Mr Logan's absences regardless of content.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio in his blog reports Bridgeport won it's Saturday game 4-3 against Lowell with Jesse Joensuu playing well according to the beatwriter.
Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio recaps Bridgeport's 4-3 win against Lowell in Shelton with comments from forward prospect Vladimir Nikiforov who talks about the speed at this level and that the soon to be twenty one year old would like to stay.
Mr Fornabaio also reports Bridgeport signed defenseman Andy Sertich to an AHL contract, supplanting the ECHL contract he had with Utah. Tomas Marcinko skated with the team for the first time at Saturday practice.
Bridgeport concludes it's preseason Sunday at 4:30pm when it faces Hartford at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell.
Ct Post: Mr Fornabaio's feature is on Islanders 2005 second round selection Dustin Kohn with comments about what he did to improve off this ice this summer and more from head coach Jack Capuano and team captain Mark Wotton about his potential.
NYI Fan Central: Current Poll extended into Tuesday after Islanders play against Florida which is when management in New York and Bridgeport will be making it's roster cuts for opening night.
Times & Transcript: Gerard McLaughlin previews Islander training camp in Moncton.
NYI Fan Central Comments: Solid research work here from the local writer pointing out the club is looking for a big year from Comeau and it's record in one goal games suggest they have be competitive in games, the recap even included how Gordon conducted practice on Monday.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Shelly Anderson has the first comments from Miroslav Satan in a North America paper that he felt it was a combination of an off year and playing on a struggling team with New York last season as he mentioned a change of style may help.
NYI Fan Central Comments: Fair enough that he played hurt last year and struggled but that went on for most of the last two seasons whether he was hurt or not. Sometimes the puck does not go in and the numbers suffer but you expect to see him use his shot and generate chances, that did not happen nearly enough as he disappeared for long stretches.
Also he seemed completely lost when he was on the point during a powerplay.
Barrie Examiner: Ian Shantz reports Islanders prospect Matt Martin's rights were included in a multi-player trade last season between the Barrie Colts and the Sarnia Sting where he was to finish out the year with Sarnia and then play for Barrie but Martin according to the writer has a so-called no-trade clause in his contract that he refused to waive which now has OHL commissioner David Branch involved to arbitrate the dispute.
Mr Shantz speculates Matt Martin is a candidate to be named the Sting's captain this season when returned by the Islanders from training camp.
Times & Transcript: Neil Hodge has an interview with Islander prospect Andrew MacDonald who played two season in Moncton, what it means to be here for training camp as he looks to play for Bridgeport all season.
Quick Hits: Michael Fornabaio wrote in his blog Vladimir Nikiforov is on an AHL deal and that it was mentioned only in passing a couple of weeks ago.
Mark Everson doing his best to stir the pot actually had the gall to do a limited space article that Devils coach Brent Sutter leans toward North American players and away from Europeans which he dismissed as non-sense as should everyone regarding anything Mark Everson presents to the public.
Newsday: Greg Logan's article has an update on Mike Comrie who is working his way back from hip surgery also but says he will play by the opener as he talked about the team and the expectations.
NYI Fan Central Comments: I think it's fair to say anyone who saw pictures during the summer saw a few of them with him on crutches. I'm not sure this is a story that merits an article to where camp and prospects were ignored today but if he is held back for a while it is newsworthy.
Newsday: Arthur Staple's article was on local product, left winger Vladimir Nikiforov who reported after a tryout invite in July was again invited to the current rookie camp. Garth Snow comments along with his father while some lineage is drawn with other local products who have made the NHL as he has made an impression on a few veterans.
NYI Fan Central Comments: I was a little skeptical of what former Ranger beatwriter Arthur Staple would write about today but he did a very good job here.
I'm also a little confused here because in one part of the article it's written he was invited to this weeks camp according to Mr Staple but then he writes Nikiforov is on a two-way minor-league contract with the Isles, so he may end up in Bridgeport or Utah.
I will add his profile if there is one to the prospects blog in the Bridgeport section if he is signed given he cannot go back to the junior league given his age.
No formal announcement was made of a signing to my knowledge, I wonder if Mr Fornabaio can confirm that for us?
OHL.com: Has Vladimir Nikiforov profile with the Sarnia Sting for those curious. The Islanders website had a feature back during prospect camp in July which was linked to the Sarnia website here.
Tsn.ca/several media sources: Report former Islander Mathieu Schneider has been placed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks.
NYI Fan Central Comments: I do not see a fit with the Islanders given they have seven defenders under contract for the next two years and his contract is hardly a bargain. If healthy and at his best he may be a nice stop gap for a year in terms of offense but if you sign him you have to move a defender.
Would not shock me to see general manager Garth Snow put in a claim but if he did he has to move someone or put a regular in the stands long-term. I think if the Isles can offset this by offering a combination of Andy Hilbert, Richard Park or Freddy Meyer to offset the cap hit it's move that may be worth it but with Schneider on waivers we are past that point.
Windsor Star: Reports Josh Bailey has been named the new captain of the Windsor Spitfires with head coach Bob Boughner's comments.
Sound Tigers website: Has the projected lineups for Thursday's prospect game in Shelton against the Bruins.
Islanders website: Jason Lockhart reports on the final day of prospects camp with Jesse Joensuu netting a hat-trick as Team Trottier takes Shakey Cup in a 5-3 victory. Blake Comeau sets up three goals. Comments from Joensuu, Islanders assistant coach Dan Lacroix and Matt Martin who got pointers from Joel Rechlicz on fighting after scrimmage.
Islanders Website: John Hill has a feature on camp invitee Vladimir Nikiforov from Huntington who played for the Sarnia Sting who is also here with teammates and Islander draft picks Justin DiBenedetto, Matt Martin and Mark Katic.
BCHL.com: Has a feature on camp invitee Anthony Perdicaro.
