New York Notables, Trivino, Satan Update

New York Islander Fan Central | 8/08/2012 06:56:00 PM
A very quiet time for the NHL/New York Islanders in general as the CBA dance continues which will only get serious come early September in ownership circles.

For those wondering this blog only is interested in Corey Trivino regarding hockey matters. As of early 8/8/12 Boston Herald reported BU spokesman Colin Riley said Trivino is no longer enrolled at the school meaning he did not graduating voiding his 8/15 graduating deadline.

The Boston Globe  reported, Trivino, a Canadian Citizen was expelled from school. A student visa that allowed him to stay in the United States while he studied is no longer valid, and he will live at home in the Toronto area until he reports to training camp.

His attorney/agents made clear he intends to sign an NHL contract within the next month whether it be with the Islanders or another NHL organization.

NYIFC Comments:
Per the cba this means at some point he had to give the Isles notice he intended to turn professional per the Wheeler rule meaning the Isles had thirty days to negotiate a contract or he is an UFA which could have happened this week or at some earlier point.

Still this likely means the Isles just wasted a second round pick with no return.

sport.cas.sk: Has a new interview with Miroslav Satan where he makes clear he could remain in Slovakia, or play in the KHL with nothing difinitive regarding Lubomir Visnovsky's claim about the Isles negotiating with him but he does discuss a possible lockout.

sport.aktuality: Had Satan's comments 8/8 Islanders are a possibility with his son enrolled in school here.
Detractors in hockey is whispered that it is excluded or an alternative that would have ultimately anchored in Ney York Islanders. So which is it?

"Yes, there is such a possibility, but now the team seriously considered. The threatened lockout overseas, so this option is currently not consider too. "

NYIFC Comments:
Satan did not play in the NHL last season, he is entitled to sign wherever he wishes, what Visnovsky said really does not tell us what Satan or the Isles are absolutely interested nor have the Isles had any restrictions in making him offers in many recent year as he has trained here.

If a hearing date is announced for Visnovsky, we'll finally get an answer which if a CBA issue could drag on for months. There is no law Anaheim's gm, Bob Murray, has to even show up, he could simply decide to keep him or trade him to a team on his allowed list while Garth Snow get's back his draft pick.

Visnovsky May Elect Arbitration To Void Islanders Trade, Satan Contacted

New York Islander Fan Central | 7/23/2012 07:13:00 AM
Pravda.sk & Sport.aktuality.sk & Sport.sme.sk:  Is reporting a clause for the fifth year in Lubomir Visnovsky's Edmonton to Anaheim contract may allow his agent, Neil Sheehy, to contest via NHLPA arbitration his trade to the New York Islanders because he would have a limited NTC which would void his trade to the Islanders, sending him back to Anaheim.

Visnovsky for his part is again not making a commitment either way, and could report regardless, but did disclose Garth Snow was negotiating with former Islander, Miroslav Satan at some point.

"In Anaheim, they think that clause trejd with my consent in exchange for leaving Edmonton fell into what they claim to lead the NHL. Another view is not gambling association NHLPA, and the wonder of the arbitration court proceedings. While it is not clear whether I win it, but I talked about it with my agent Neil Sheehy. he says to arbitration, we could learn who is right. Chances are, it balanced. it is up to me, as I choose. I would be the first hockey player with such a problematic point of agreement that could be turned to the arbitral tribunal. If the dispute eventually succeed, I would once again become a player in Anaheim. But after the June exchange, I would probably abode there, and obviously, I really wrote a list of ten of clubs, which would I wanted to play and where would I be able to send. There wonder if I will go ahead or not wait for it, "he told Sport newspaper Lubomir Visnovsky, who is the new season prepared in Bratislava.

If the experienced defender decided to stay at NY Islanders, in season 2012/2013 might not be the only Slovaks in the report "islanders". Club general manager Garth Snow is lanári striker Miroslav Satan, who has the Islanders played in the past. "Garth Snow phoned me once that it was negotiating with Miroslav Satan. Maybe I should not notify the media too, but told me to break it to come back to Long Island, where he played in the past," he told Sport Ľ.

HC Slovan website has Miroslav Satan's stats (61gp, 31 goals, 74 points) who played with Zigmund Palffy (90 points) in 2011-12.

NYIFC Comments:
Bottom line the trade could be voided if an arbitrator rules in Visnovsky's favor landing him back in Anaheim (if he elects arbitration/wins/decides to return to Anaheim) as the Isles would get back their second round draft pick. It all comes down to the language of his contract/extent of the teams his contract allowed his rights to be traded to.

The comments speak for themselves, but overall this is becoming simply not worth territory it for the New York Islanders because if  Visnovsky is willing to have his agent elect arbitration at all obviously he does not really want to be here.

If you reference New York Islander Fan Central, please refer to the title of this entry because that's the only story at this time, the papers referenced reported the story with Visnovsky's quoted comments.

Let's also be clear, Visnovsky did not say he does not wish to be here, he may elect arbitration or not, he could report or not.

Please do not twist quoted comments into something different.

If Visnovsky ultimately wishes to have his rights back with Anaheim forcing a trade to a team on his list or perhaps not report anywhere, it's time to get back the second rounder, and give his spot to someone else.

Miroslav Satan is on Long Island for a charity tournament as reported on WFAN this morning, only Snow/Visnovsky know when Satan was contacted which could have been  at any time this summer which will likely not make Snow a happy camper learning Visnovsky made that public.

One thing I can write is this is why Dolan's Newsday reporter, Arthur Staple's work needs to be questioned, he did a poor/sloppy job with information he reported contacting Visnovsky after the trade.

Waiver Update: Sim, Satan Included

New York Islander Fan Central | 3/03/2009 01:22:00 PM
Took waivers off the other entry and created a fresh one, teams are trying to clear space for trades. Snow controls the first claim if there is someone he wants or in this case wants to move.

Newsday: Mr Logan reports Jon Sim has been placed on NHL waivers Tuesday which Mr Botta also reported earlier here.

Mr Logan also adds:
Scott Gordon offered a terse answer on if he has spoken with Sim as he did Bergenheim, saying they met at the start of the season and he would keep the conversation private and even though one might read the move as symptomatic of an attempt to purge the locker room of unhappy veterans. Fans just have to hope the club still is making decisions based on hockey reasons and not personality conflicts.

NYI Fan Central Comments:

Or it's simply possible Scott Gordon's response is a personality conflict with Greg Logan who is making every move into a public problem between player/coach and is getting a little tired of being asked about it?

Gordon was upset recently with the media asking him about blown leads, cannot put that on the player-coach relationship.
*************************************************************
Tsn.ca: Bob McKenzie reports Sean Avery was claimed on re-entry waivers by the Rangers.

Let the Cablevision/Newsday spin-doctoring begin based on what John Tortorella said, which I suspect will not get the play Gordon-Guerin got.

I wanted the Islanders to take a chance, looks like a lot of team are betting against him, hard to blame them.

Good luck to Avery.
*****************************************************************
Tsn.ca: Reports Miroslav Satan, Brendan Morrison Gary Roberts, Martin Gerber, Brenden Bell, Aaron Voros, Erik Reitz, Eric Perrin, Craig Adams have also been placed on waivers.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
For those who recall Snow was interested in Perrin a few years ago, Satan's been scoring a little lately but I guess the Pens have had enough or want to save space for someone better.

Islander/NHL Notables

New York Islander Fan Central | 2/09/2009 04:35:00 PM
Los Angeles Daily News: Rich Hammon's blog coverage for those wanting to know what's up with the LA Kings.

Tomorrow's pregame blog is set for release at 1pm.

St Louis Post Dispatch: Jeremy Rutherford reports Andy McDonald has been signed to a four year extension for 18.8m by the Blues.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
This was the player traded for Doug Weight last year from Anaheim.

McDonald has been on IR since November with six goals and a minus twelve for the John Davidson run franchise who currently sit at 15th in the Western Conference.

It may give a little bit of a read on the market for what Comrie/others may want to sign long-term.

USA Today/several media: Report Dallas winger Sean Avery cleared NHL waivers Monday with the next move an NHL team extending him an offer to play for their AHL affiliate because Dallas does not currently have one.

NYI Fan Central Comments:

Our new poll is up, I had my say and will add remember Nielsen getting throw into Florida's bench Saturday or Avery hitting Okposo last year?

Vinnie LeCavalier was not exactly scared of Tim Jackman and those one shift games from Mitch Fritz were not getting it done. I wish Bill Guerin had someone here to fight for him and Nate Thompson when he's been healthy does not exactly drop the gloves often.

It's in Garth Snow's hands first if/when Dallas puts him on recall waivers unless they pass Atlanta in the standings.

SI: Reports Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick won NHL player honors stopping 95 of 100 shots in three consecutive road victories, lifting the Kings (23-21-7, 53 points) within three points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference as they head to New York for Tuesday's game.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
This is on the back end of being shutout by Mike McKenna Saturday.

SI: Michael Farber says Dallas management forgives the co-gm with no experience of the Dallas Stars for signing Sean Avery because he won a Stanley Cup with Dallas but publications like SI cheap-shot the Islanders for hiring a gm with no experience?

NYI Fan Central Comments:
All I can write is if Garth Snow gave Avery that money his inexperience would be a major issue and folks like Michael Farber or Jim Kelley would be unloading on Charles Wang and Garth Snow, not talking about Hull's playing career and that management is simply writing this off.

In other words Mr Farber copped out here big time not being critical of Hull as he would have been of Snow.

BTW-MacDonald and Danis are looking very good right now if you read the other part of this article about goaltenders. Does Snow dare trade one of them at the deadline if the return is good or he signs one of them for next season?

Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Rob Rossi reports former Islander Miroslav Satan is apparently in the dog house as his ice-time has been limited.

Post Gazette: Beatwriter Dave Molinary had the following (not all) answering a question about Satan:

Obviously, he has not come close to living up to their expectations, and his inability to contribute in other situations when he's not scoring has rendered him pretty much of no value to this team. There's always a chance he'll start producing goals on a regular basis, but there's also a chance the Penguins' game against San Jose tomorrow will be postponed because an asteroid will land on Mellon Arena in late afternoon. Don't bet big money on either, however.

Note-That's the same reaction Mr Molinary had on Avery working out in Pittsburgh if claimed.

Shelly Anderson: In a chat for the paper feels Satan is just not a good fit for the Pens with two goals in twenty four games after a good start.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Funny, all I read last summer was the Islanders were Satan's problem and playing it Pittsburgh he would produce big numbers. Satan as usual has virtually nothing to say. Ruslan Fedotenko is still out with an injury.

Imagine where the Islanders would be if Snow gave them longer term deals?

30th which is where they are with three hundred man games lost to injury anyway.

Islander News Articles 1/30

New York Islander Fan Central | 1/29/2009 11:19:00 PM
Newsday: Greg Logan's game recap reports Islander head coach Scott Gordon did not even wait to hear a reporters question about earlier blown leads before launching into what the Newsday beatwriter calls a rant who wanted to talk about his team getting five points in it's last three games and his young players.

Kyle Okposo also comments about his third period who credited Comeau and Bailey for their play-making.

NYI Fan Central Comments:

I thought Scott Gordon was under the weather during his post-game, apparently he got a bit annoyed beyond Msg+ postgame.

I will put up the video when/if ITV has it.

Was he upset with Mr Logan, C.J Papa, Mike Knobler, AP/CP reporter?
George Henry had an AP entry.

Safe bet Times, Post and Daily News were not in Atlanta.

All I know is Newsday has played up the third period blown leads all season, if the Islanders were the Knicks I wonder if the perception created and theme would have been the same if their prospects won the game in similar fashion?

This is why teams needs more than one beat reporter/newspaper. You need competition between papers/professional writers for scoops/information and if things get tense in interviews the papers/reporters not involved usually will report the story and play no favorites.

Remember Barry Baum vs John Vanbiesbrouck back in 2001 here or the Ranger beat writers ganging up on a Toronto radio personality last season?

One thing for sure, if Newsday is the issue here the staff will make sure to gang up on the Islanders with no response from the club.

Good for Scott Gordon, this team has been in a lot of close games lately and have not had the third period theme surface for a while, the kids and the win did deserve to be the story.

Newsday: Greg Logan in a late blog entry had comments from Josh Bailey and Kyle Okposo about how their line played under pressure with the focus on the third period they produced.

Atlanta Journal Constitution: Mike Knobler's coverage points out the Thrashers moved closer to the Islanders for 30th seed and a better chance at Tavares in the game recap.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Dave Molinary reports on former Islander Miroslav Satan who has one goal in eighteen games after a good start for Pittsburgh with his comments along with gm Ray Shero and head coach Michel Therrien.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has Jeremy Colliton's comments on returning to the lineup for Friday's game against Hartford with head coach Jack Capuano's comments.

Islander News Articles 11/9

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/08/2008 10:54:00 PM
Newsday: Greg Logan has the early recap of the Islanders 4-3 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with Miroslav Satan's comments about leaving the Islanders because of their youth-movement and signing with Pittsburgh here.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Satan should know better than anyone the Pens had some of the same problems drawing fans for years until the ping-pong balls bounced their way. With only one full-time beatwriter for the Islanders he may have had more to say that did not make the article.

Post-Gazette Dave Molinary & Tribune-Review with Mike Prisuta has the Pens coverage.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Great stuff from Dave Molinary who had comments on Okposo that did not make any of the local papers along with the very funny story on Fedotekno and what Mike Sillinger had waiting at his locker.

NY Post: Dan Martin's article has comments from head coach Scott Gordon about the club sitting back in the third period and Andy Hilbert.

Daily News: Peter Botte did not have a single quote from the coach or players about the game but did report on Nate Thompson's injury along with the Islanders man-injury games lost already at seventy nine and climbing.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
For those scoring at home this means the New York Islanders will lose about seven hundred man games to injury if things go this way all season. It's almost never mentioned anywhere nor was it once last season when they led the league at over four hundred man games lost.

The Republican: Gary Brown has a few words on Islanders captain Bill Guerin from Wilbraham and ex-Falcon Mitch Fritz not knowing he was sent back to Bridgeport.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann has a feature on LI products that have made the NHL and the upcoming prospects in the area with comments from Mike Komisarek and Chris Higgins of the Montreal Canadians.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio recaps Bridgeport's 5-4 against the River Rats with comments from goaltender Nate Lawson and head coach Jack Capuano.

Daily Gazette: Has the River Rats coverage.

The Nassau County Fire Fighters Operation Wounded Warrior (NCFF-OWW) will be collecting care packages at the main box office entrance and Gate 16. If you can stop in and help these folks and in their efforts it would be greatly appreciated.

NCFF-OWW is a registered non-profit organization of Fire Fighters who run a collection campaign of care package items prior to the holidays for the past several years.

During the first weekend in December the group will be involved with "Long Red Line" of fire vehicles that bring the collections to the Wounded Warriors who will be spending their holidays recovering in the Hospitals away from their families who visit, Fr. Bragg, Camp Lejeune, Bethesda Naval and Walter Reed Army Hospitals.

Pittsburgh at New York 7pm Msg+

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/08/2008 01:14:00 PM
USA Today/AP: Reports Sidney Crosby is questionable for tonight's game against the Islanders while Pittsburgh Post Gazette's Dave Molinary here has more on this and reports Dany Sabourin is expected to start in goal.

Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Mike Prisuta has Crosby's comments he hopes to suit up for tonight's game while Miroslav Satan says the Islanders decided they're going to go with young guys and rebuild, and he would rather be on a team that has a chance to win.

Updated:
Crosby is expected to play tonight.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Have to think this is a very fragile and angry Islander team hearing about all the blown leads but right now they only have time to get back to work and start skating.

Pens come in with Whitney and Gonchar out long-term on defense, no excuse for the Islanders not to get in the trenches and make the Pens defense work in their own end of the ice.

The Islanders simply cannot afford to sink much lower in the standings or they are going to reach that double-digit point level plus of being out of contention which means forget any realistic shot at a playoff race unless this group has a significant winning streak in them.

The defense is going to have to make some plays, the forwards need some even strength and MacDonald has to keep playing at a high level and give them a chance.

The practice lines looked promising with Bergenheim back and Okposo on right wing with Tambellini on the left with Nielsen and Hunter.

Pittsburgh has won two straight with Satan playing well along with Malkin, no doubt both former Islanders will want to prove something to their former management.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio reports in his Sound Tigers blog Tim Jackman was recalled to New York, Mitch Fritz and Ben Walter will play tonight for the Sound Tigers.

Islander Insider/Ownership Notable

New York Islander Fan Central | 11/07/2008 02:25:00 PM
Newsday: Greg Logan's one page Islander Insider Friday has a few words on Scott Gordon's family living in Atlanta full-time despite the fact he has coached in Providence and now New York.

Alan Walsh, Miroslav Satan's agent talks about Ted Nolan not using his client properly last season which was why his Islander production declined along with making sure his comments were not a criticism of general manager Garth Snow.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Mr Walsh can say these things about the Islanders former coach but fact is Satan's play in Buffalo made his departure addition by subtraction for practically everyone associated with the Sabres at that time.

Nolan last season denied reports about friction and credited Satan for playing with a knee injury that was supposed to keep him out for eight weeks, agents sell players to the public but there is more than one person's side here.

This is also Satan's former coach in Buffalo.

Too many nights the last two years Satan looked like a passenger for this team, including the playoffs and the blame goes on everyone. I hope he does great for Pittsburgh, he is off to a strong start but that does not change what happened here.

Notable:
I always kind of laugh when folks claim Charles Wang saved this team from moving.

He did save a lot of things with some fantastic efforts that cannot be praised enough but from outright moving? No.

Since when did Howard or Ed Milstein ever threaten to move this team once Howard Milstein lost his scoreboard fight?

The County/Smg leases until 2014-2015 in those days made moving impossible and the cable contract that provided over three hundred million dollars through 2030 made that a non-starter for any relocation talk. No one walks away from that kind of revenue.

Mr Wang has done a ton of great things here and no doubt I will miss listing a few here starting with spend a hundred a thirty million plus in the summer of 2002 where the Milstein's spent fifteen million on payroll. That began the first year with taking on Roman Hamrlik's contract.

Mr Wang bought into a new Islander-only affiliate for prospects, bailed out Roy Boe again saving the Sound Tigers a few years later. He settled lawsuits with Smg and has for the most part aside of a few blurbs in articles about relocating to Suffolk a few years ago has never done anything but remain loyal to owning this franchise.

He also added some great improvements to the Coliseum, has been first class with the alumni and has gone above and beyond to promote this club, sustaining no doubt big losses with a lease that does not even give him the full ticket revenue, no concessions or parking.

Mr Wang has also been a first class individual standing up and taking the blame for the club's failures, being visible as owner of this club in the community and has done countless great things under his tenure along with the Bridgeport community including the initiatives with the Chinese affiliation and the Dragons.

To his credit he has remained an optimist and kept reinventing what he is trying to do in a sea of pessmisism.

New York Islander fans have had unprecedented access to this team and information from it with his website and ITV which his vision brought to the NHL.

I also greatly respect the effort to create a new generation of Islander fans even if I disagree with the LI campaign in a New York Hockey market where there is simply not a great deal of interest in any of the three teams against the major sports.

The owners before were never visible and that includes John Pickett.

Having written that who is to say that another owner may not have come along and bought the franchise and done some of the same things? One group backed out at a time before Mr Wang involving Bob Gutkowski.

Long-term if the Lighthouse is not approve Mr Wang can opt out of the Nassau County lease. That does not mean the Smg or Cable contract lease would be voided and to Mr Wang's credit he has not discussed what would happen one way or another or made any kind of threat.

It has to be noted a Lighhouse Project only includes a ten year extension of the Coliseum lease to 2025.

Give Mr Wang the highest marks for what he has done and with leaving the Dragons with local ownership when he sold the club recently, however please lets tone down any talk the club would no longer be here without him.
********************************************************
I did a little reading the other day and I have a little theory on why the Times has virtually nothing to do with the New York Islanders anymore.

Howard Milstein as of 2007 became a significant stockholder in the Times ownership writing opinion articles for the paper here.

Friday Notables/Quick Hit

New York Islander Fan Central | 9/26/2008 02:14:00 PM
SoundTigers.com: Has a recap of day seven at camp which was an optional skate with the Blue-White game at Summer and the NHL game in Ontario not getting either group back to Moncton until after midnight.

Newsday: Greg Logan's blog update has Scott Gordon's comments on what players are headed where after Saturday's game against Florida along with making sure no more injuries occur while the beatwriter tried to put together who was where in their recovery with some speculation as to when Rick DiPietro and others could play.

Scott Gordon also talked more about the loss against Philadelphia.

A few folks have asked me when I plan on doing a review and prediction for the Islanders this year?

I recently just reviewed every player in the organization, the plan is to do a review with a final prediction in the stretch between the final preseason game and the opener instead of putting something together early just to get it done quickly.

I want to see (or read) a little more about the players too. A week ago they just had their first practice with Scott Gordon.

Moose Jaw Warriors: Announced Islander prospect Travis Hamonic is scheduled to rejoin the his junior club later today as the Warriors get set to take on the Wheat Kings.

ECHL.com: Announce Justin Bourne who was in rookie camp with the Islanders a year ago and played for Utah has been signed by the Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Obviously the exodus is beginning with most of the unsigned prospects heading back to their junior clubs. Some of the Sound Tiger players will be heading to their camp in Shelton Ct because they have preseason games coming up while Scott Gordon and an excess of players from Bridgeport also will play the remainder of the Islander preseason schedule which includes trips to Boston and Florida.

Quick Hits:
It's amazing the selective amnesia the media has regarding players. I guess like Jagr, Satan put on the correct jersey to where media folks will forget what happened which led to a change of teams.

When Miroslav Satan was bought out by Buffalo after the lockout it was all about him being a team problem with the sentiment being good riddance. Now that he's joining the Pens his problems scoring were all about the Islanders and he's poised for a big season?

I hate when media/fans dump on players who are no longer with their team unless it's justified by their play, only thing worse is when they forget what they wrote last time that player changed clubs.

Satan had two very poor years here under Ted Nolan. From day one he looked lost playing the point on the powerplay under Steve Stirling and it only went downhill from there under Nolan with his slapshot virtually gone from the day he was acquired along with any semblance of speed. Those goals where he dropped his shoulder and charged the net were few and far between.

This season he played hurt in the second half with an injury that was supposed to keep him sidelined at least eight weeks. I never read a negative word come out of his mouth about anyone that made it into a newspaper but overall his tenure in New York was a failure nor was he a factor in big games nearly enough.

Like Fedotenko, I wish Satan nothing but the best of luck unless he's playing the Islanders and the same goes for Berard, Johnson, Vasicek and Dubielewicz but on the ice he seemed to continue his slide from back to when he was in Buffalo.

Having written that can the media stop revising the history of where Miroslav Satan was when he signed with New York?

Thanks for the two big goals on Al Arbour night.

Updated:
Kevin Allen (several media sources report here defenseman Mathieu Schneider has been traded to the Atlanta Thrashers for defenseman Ken Klee, forward Brad Larson and a minor-league prospect.

Sporting News/Courier Post: Chuck Gormley has a preview of the Islanders season as he profiles all the clubs in the Atlantic.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Some good information and he did look at the prospects but he lost me when he had Blake Comeau on right wing in his possible line combos.

Islander News Articles 9/17

New York Islander Fan Central | 9/17/2008 08:43:00 AM
Times & Transcript: Gerard McLaughlin previews Islander training camp in Moncton.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Solid research work here from the local writer pointing out the club is looking for a big year from Comeau and it's record in one goal games suggest they have be competitive in games, the recap even included how Gordon conducted practice on Monday.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Shelly Anderson has the first comments from Miroslav Satan in a North America paper that he felt it was a combination of an off year and playing on a struggling team with New York last season as he mentioned a change of style may help.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Fair enough that he played hurt last year and struggled but that went on for most of the last two seasons whether he was hurt or not. Sometimes the puck does not go in and the numbers suffer but you expect to see him use his shot and generate chances, that did not happen nearly enough as he disappeared for long stretches.

Also he seemed completely lost when he was on the point during a powerplay.

Barrie Examiner: Ian Shantz reports Islanders prospect Matt Martin's rights were included in a multi-player trade last season between the Barrie Colts and the Sarnia Sting where he was to finish out the year with Sarnia and then play for Barrie but Martin according to the writer has a so-called no-trade clause in his contract that he refused to waive which now has OHL commissioner David Branch involved to arbitrate the dispute.

Mr Shantz speculates Matt Martin is a candidate to be named the Sting's captain this season when returned by the Islanders from training camp.

Times & Transcript: Neil Hodge has an interview with Islander prospect Andrew MacDonald who played two season in Moncton, what it means to be here for training camp as he looks to play for Bridgeport all season.

Quick Hits:
Michael Fornabaio wrote in his blog Vladimir Nikiforov is on an AHL deal and that it was mentioned only in passing a couple of weeks ago.

Mark Everson doing his best to stir the pot actually had the gall to do a limited space article that Devils coach Brent Sutter leans toward North American players and away from Europeans which he dismissed as non-sense as should everyone regarding anything Mark Everson presents to the public.

NYI Fan Central Final Review of Miroslav Satan

New York Islander Fan Central | 4/26/2008 08:25:00 AM
Today's review puts the focus on Islanders right wing Miroslav Satan.

2007-08:
Going into his contract year a lot was expected of Miroslav Satan given the changes made to the roster and the veterans needing to produce more offense on a club that lost a lot of goals off it's roster last summer. Many expected a big year after what was an off one by Satan's offensive standards.

Simply put it did not happen and he struggled for the most part with his inconsistent production from beginning to end.

There are a lot of ways you can go with this, was it the defensive system or the coach again putting him on the point where he is not longer the player he was in Buffalo that Ted Nolan saw a decade ago?

From what I saw this was simply a player who looked like he has declined and picked up right where he left off the year before. He started slow, he a few nice goals where he dropped the shoulder and charged the net and he had the big goals on Al Arbour night, but in the end he went from being a streaky player to one where he was virtually invisible in the second half.

I'm not putting it on Vasieck, Bergenheim or his other centers or wingers, he simply did not produce consistently regardless of who he was with.

Worst of all I do think he was trying his best. I saw him dive to create plays and work hard on defense and penalty killing when called on early.

Part of me want's to give him high marks for playing with a knee injury that reportedly was supposed to keep him out for eight weeks but if Alexi Yashin did not get a pass for playing hurt and being unproductive, why should Satan who did not seem nearly as hurt as Yashin but did not get into the high quality area's?

For a few games Nolan even tried a makeshift first line as Satan shifted to the left with Comrie-Guerin. Nothing got him going nor did he generate his chances beyond a rare goal. He never complained in public about trying to play on the point for the a terrible powerplay as Bill Guerin called it.

Looking forward:
I don't have a clue what's going to happen. Reportedly he was offered a two year contract, but did not want to negotiate in season. Suppoedly he was never asked to waiver his NTC at the deadline. With Guerin, Hunter under contract and Okposo perhaps waiting for a right wing spot come camp or the year after there may not be a spot for him. His skills may be on the decline, he has had a couple of poor years in a row and the Isles did not have a great three years with him here. One thing I do know is they need more speed and skill than Satan gave them for his paycheck and overall ability whether he was hurt or not.

Tough call, but I think it's time to take a chance and walk away, even if he his skill and shot are tough to replace. Even in the world of crazy UFA contracts I cannot see a club willing to overpay here, someone else may end up with a bargain on a team loaded with speed/skill who can get him the puck with time and space.

Final Grade:
Even if I wanted to give Satan a full pass and high marks for playing hurt with an injury in the second half, why did he start so slowly, why was he outworked by Bergenheim and Vasicek and the other wingers with most of half a season? Where was his urgency from day one to step up as a remaining veteran and be visible for the new veterans with his play?

Thanks for the two goals on Al Arbour night, but first half, second half, no matter how you slice this, Miroslav Satan gets an F and a pink slip.

Yashin vs Satan, double standard by Nolan?

New York Islander Fan Central | 4/18/2008 06:11:00 PM
I'm not going to claim to be an insider or anything. I have no idea what goes on in the Islander lockeroom, who talks or is popular among the players.

All I see is what happens during the games and to me it begs a fair question be asked and one I have been wanting to ask for a while.

If Alexei Yashin who had an outstanding start and carried the club into December two years ago scored forty percent of the offense with Jason Blake and Chris Simon on his line can be sent home for ineffective play because he was playing hurt and ineffective how come Ted Nolan did not apply the same standard to Miroslav Satan this year and force him to sit until he could be effective?

Let me refresh you to Yashin's circumstances. He injured his knee on a ninety point pace, missed a few weeks, came back early, had a good game but was injured again and clearly could not move on his knee. Anyone watching could see him in obvious pain.

Ted Nolan let him play about eighteen games where he had maybe a goal, was clearly slowed and totally ineffective before he finally sent him home and basically ran him down in the press telling everyone he would not play until he could contribute as if he had no tolerance for a player trying to play with an injury on one leg.

This year Miroslav Satan did not look good early, aside from a few brief flashes. I do not know when he specifically got hurt but after missing a game the team announcing he has an injury that should sideline him for eight weeks kept playing and for the most part was terrible. He did not contribute on the scoresheet.

So how come Ted Nolan did not apply the same standard for Satan, who has been ineffective for most of the last two seasons?

Alexei Yashin when he finally returned produced ten critical points to help the club make the playoffs and two key goals against the Rangers, one in the third period.

Someone needs to tell me what the difference is here because I'm not seeing it. Viktor Kozlov when he signed with Washington also felt there was a double-standard against his friend.

It should be noted Yashin's fifty points in fifty eight games was greater than any one player on this years roster.

If Yashin's buyout was on Ted Nolan's opinion it gives the owner fair reason to ask questions because the loss of his offense hurt the roster whether he was popular with the media or not.

New York will select fifth in draft

New York Islander Fan Central | 4/07/2008 05:37:00 PM

Lottery Results:
1-Tampa
2-Los Angeles
3-Atlanta
4-St Louis
5-New York
6-Columbus

Islanders website: Issued a release after the lottery with comments from Garth Snow.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Let the debate begin on who the Isles will select with the fifth pick. Stamkos did not seem to be doing cartwheels.

Josef Vasicek and Trent Hunter and Rick DiPietro did ITV interviews on the season. Vasicek said he wants to return next season when interviewed by Chris King. Isles had over forty games with two goals or less.

Expect more interviews to be added.

Canadian Press: Had a full article today with comments from Bill Guerin, Richard Park, Ted Nolan and Miroslav Satan on the injuries, slumps and disappointment.

Miroslav Satan said he hopes not when asked if Friday was his final Islander game as he talked about his numbers not being up to his standards and that next year is a better season.

Newsday: Greg Logan's article is on the line changes and the powerplay. Miroslav Satan, Mike Comrie give their comments.

Brendan Witt skated but is unlikely to play, Bruno Gervais might miss the remainder of the season with his concussion/knee injury.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I wonder why Mr Logan is trying to pass this off as a demotion or raise it as an issue with Comrie or Satan? Does this team have a first line on paper at this point in the season? It seems from here the coach wants Comeau where he belongs on the left wing with the teams best center so how is that a demotion?

If Mr Logan wants to play this angle how come he did not play up a Richard Park promotion to first line center?

Is any one line seeing a significant drop in minutes or is it simply a question of finally putting players at the positions they belong in because that's what it looks like to me.

Tambellini-Park-Guerin
Comeau-Comrie-Jackman
Regier-Walter-Satan
Bergenheim-Vasicek-Hunter

A day or two ago Ted Nolan gave the impression Gervais and even Sutton could return by the Montreal game. Any doubts at this point and both players should be shut down for the year. I'm wondering why Satan is even playing with an injury at this point that could cost him big money in free agency or from the Isles.

AP: Chris Simon was very critical of the league for not suspending Chris Pronger what he feels is unfair treatment.

Globe & Mail: Alan Maki reports Chris Pronger's situtation will be looked at again by the league with more from Chris Simon.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Impossible to disagree with his comments.

NY Times: Dave Caldwell was allowed to make another Coliseum visit and covered the loss to Philadelphia with the obvious theme being the goals allowed on the Islanders powerplay.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
No excuse for the editor to not assign a writer Sunday to honor the Core of the Four.

Courier Post OnlinePhiladelphin Inquirer/Daily News Phillyburbs: Has all the Flyer centric coverage on their win.

Montreal Gazette: Red Fisher had a few words from Ted Nolan praising the job Penguins coach Michel Terrien has done with the injuries to his club as Mr Fisher praised the Islanders coach.

Islander News Articles 2/27:

New York Islander Fan Central | 2/27/2008 01:46:00 AM

Newsday: Mark Herrmann's game article was on the all the shots the Islanders got but did not finish with Rob Davison, Ty Conklin and Sean Bergenheim's comments.

Newsday: Greg Logan blogged during the game on the Islanders youth and Garth Snow's plan to build.

Newsday: Mark Herrmann's other article had Ted Nolan and Garth Snow's comments on the trades of Chris Simon and Marc-Andre Bergeron and what Mike Comrie brings to the roster. Garth Snow talked about working the kids in, Ted Nolan about having to coach who he has. Mr Herrmann points out this team will not be winning the Stanley Cup.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
It could well be true that the Isles do not win the cup this year but it's a little early to write off anyone who has a chance at a playoff spot is out of any chance at winning a cup this year. Conklin had to play very well in the game and the Isles did outwork Pittsburgh for most of the night. Isles took fifty shots and lost, Conklin had to make a few great saves.

Newsday: Greg Logan's article is on Chris Simon's trade with Ted Nolan's comments. Chris Simon declined comments, Mr Logan talked about the compromise between the coach and gm to keep the core players for a playoff run but did subtract Simon so Tambellini could play. Mike Comrie talks about why he wanted to resign here.

NY Times: Dave Caldwell had Ted Nolan, Garth Snow and Chris Simon's comments on his trade to Minnesota, the Islanders moves at the trade deadline and Miroslav Satan's comments that we have basically the same group and do not have to change anything.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Other than noting the game result into the article, nothing was written, why no game article?

Daily News: Peter Botte's game article was on the loss of Chris Simon with Ted Nolan's comments as well as a full article on the Comrie signing and the other Isles moves around 4pm. here.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I'm satisfied, not asking for huge articles but two articles in one day with updates is fair. Let's see more space and a Daily News Islander blog now so this team get's more exposure and more fans attending.

NY Post: Mike Puma covered the beat with a small article on the game and the trade deadline with a small portion of Garth Snow's comments with nothing on Mike Comrie resigning.

NY Post: Also reported Dan Martin's father passed away Saturday.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
My condolences to Dan Martin and his family.

Minnesota Wild Website: Jamie MacDonald has Chris Simon's comments from the Wild site on his trade. The video pondcast included during Minnesota's game Tuesday has a full interview with Simon between periods where he says he was quietly hoping something would happen in terms of being traded.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Dave Molinary recaps the Penguins win after a big day with a lot of coverage on their deadline trades.

Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Rob Rossi recaps the Penguins win.

Anaheim website: Has Brian Burke's comments on adding Marc-Andre Bergeron to his teams lineup and his expectations for him.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Hopefully at some point I can add some comments from Bergeron. Not the worst day going to play on a defense with Pronger and Niedermayer but will he play is the question?

Pioneer Press: John Shipley was critical of Wild management for adding Simon but had reaction from Gm Doug Risebrough. coach Jacques LeMaire, Chris Simon and Gary Bettman where he said I am a believer in progressive discipline at some point, under some circumstances, you get to a point where enough is enough.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Chris Simon made it clear no one has ever missed a game or a shift from one of his suspensions, that may be true but as he has said at times it does not excuse his actions.

Going to be interesting to see the Minnesota press reactions after some media there felt Kyle Okposo was signed by the Isles to distract from Simon's suspension in December.

Yahoo spots.com: Ross McKeon gave Garth Snow a D+ for his trade deadline deals citing he did not improve the offense.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I'm not sure this is a deadline day only grade but he did resign Hunter and Comrie which to me has to be a part of the overall grade.

Star-Tribune: Patrick Reusse was very critical of Doug Riesbrough and has his comments on the acquisition of Chris Simon.

Espn.com: Scott Burnside had a quick paragraph on each team and noted the Isles did not improve but of course feels it's inexplicable but they will hang around the playoffs for a while longer.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
He credits Chicago and Edmonton for modest winning streaks but never credits the Isles. They did have fifty shots against Pittsburgh, close to fifty against Philadelphia and Atlanta so how about a little acknowledgement they simply are not as bad as you expected.

Why would anyone pay for their IN service for such shoddy hockey coverage across the board if the limited free coverage is this bad?

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio had a brief update on the Sound Tigers at the NHL trade deadline with Jack Capuano's comments. Isles on paper demoted Blake Comeau and Frans Nielsen to make them eligible to play in the AHL playoffs. They were recalled immediately after.

The AHL's clear day roster must be submitted by Thursday at 3 p.m., the AHL's Clear Day deadline, is when teams have to set their rosters for the remainder of the season.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio's blog had several updates at the trade deadline.

Islander News Articles 2/26

New York Islander Fan Central | 2/25/2008 11:14:00 PM
Newsday: Greg Logan reports according to an NHL source, the Islanders have made an offer to right wing Miroslav Satan in addition to their previous offers to centers Mike Comrie and Josef Vasicek. Ruslan Fedotenko's agent is engaged in discussions and has made it clear his client wants to stay, but it's doubtful that will lead to a contract before Tuesday's 3 p.m. deadline. Forward Chris Simon also is headed to free agency without an offer.

Garth Snow's comments are included while Mr Logan has a lot of speculation across the board.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I think Comrie and Fedotenko's comments speak for themselves on the video. If Satan got an offer to resign we'll know soon enough and the silence could mean anything as we found out with Trent Hunter.

What we do know is going into Tuesday the clock is running on resigning these players or getting something for them. As Hossa and Richards go off the market it increases the value of the Islander forwards if Snow does want to make a deal.

No outright law here that says the Isles are not in the mix for Richards either. Prospal traded to Philadelphia and the Bolts wanting to dump that big salary after signing Dan Boyle could make him a target for Snow if the Isles can unload some salary the other way.

SooNews.ca: Craig Huckerby reports Ted Nolan will be the subject of a tv documentary Tuesday night on CBC Newsworld at 10pm. Ted Nolan: Behind The Bench follows Nolan's dramatic return to the game of hockey following his controversial departure eight years ago.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Hopefully the Isles can work something out so the fans here have some access to the program. Curiously quiet day for the Isles head coach who was on the ice at Iceworks.

Updated-Ted Nolan was interviewed on Msg Network Monday.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Bridgeport just played three games in three days and rested Monday. The Isles play Tuesday night so if a few players are reported as not being at Sound Tigers practice tomorrow that's where we get an idea of what the Isles are trying to do if anything because they have no spare players in the NHL and have to have someone around just to have a complete roster.

Tsn.ca:Darren Dreger reported shortly after midnight Mike Comrie is close to signing a one year contract extension with the Isles.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
That's a new twist into this and maybe something both sides want. Garth Snow did about the balance about him being a first line center vs a second line center, a one year contract basically becomes a restart for him.

It also ties him to the club for as long as Bill Guerin's contract runs.

Newsday: Shaun Powell writes his first Islander-centric article of the hockey season to basically call the Coliseum a dump who had comments from Islanders senior vice president Chris Dey and compare it to Newark's Prudential Center and the ballparks rising for the Yankees and Mets.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
I understand the Isles need to have this done for too many reasons to write in one blog posting, but Mr Powell goes a bit overboard. Does he write Madison Square Garden which is four years older than the Coliseum and the second oldest NHL facility is a dump?

The biggest problem with the current Nassau Coliseum is it's lease with Smg taking the parking, concessions and even a percentage of the gate. No massive renovation solves that problem.

Newsday: Steve Zipay reports the local television ratings for all winter teams and FSN in March will now be named Msg plus. Michael Bair, president of MSG Media, says the station wants to capitalize more than we have on the Islanders and Devils he concedes have undernourished on some level for a number of years.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Undernourished? More like left starving to death. The idea in buying the rights was to keep the Islanders and Devils coverage kept behind the scenes so the Garden could control it's competition, they pay big money for the priviledge. They want to enhance coverage put some exhibiton games on television and find space for some ITV programming.

Now the Isles who cannot get any games on Msg at all compared to the Devils have to be televised on a channel that's under the Garden's name? It just get's worse and worse folks.

Ironic how whenever the Garden has an update on it's programming rating numbers are released Mr Zipay takes the Garden's report and runs with it. Last time it was reported ratings were reported by Msg's pr department so why would this be any different?

I'm not accepting these ratings numbers as factual until an independant media source steps up and reports these numbers from Nielsen.

Even in that limited report Isles ratings are down since the last time they released the numbers. Funny how the Rangers are always bumped to Msg-2 or FSN for the Knicks, if they were really more popular that would not be happening.

NY Post: Tim Bontemps is the lastest assigned an Islander article with some mild speculation on Miroslav Satan as the Pens game is previewed. Michael Therrien said yesterday he wasn't sure when Fleury would start, because he has yet to practice with the team.

Ct Post: Michael Fornabaio has a few words of speculation in his blog on the trade deadline but nothing specific.

AHL.com: Kimber Auerbach had a full feature article on Kyle Okposo that is a must read.

Mark Everson from the Post does a trade deadline article with virtually nothing significant on the Isles to a point the Isles are not even in the headline and given a quick sentence of speculation. Daily News has no article from Peter Botte and only a short sentence of speculation in a Ranger centric coverage from John Dellapina.

Times/New York Sun had nothing or a an AP article.

Newsday's Islander Insider

New York Islander Fan Central | 2/22/2008 10:17:00 AM
Newsday: Greg Logan has the weekly Islanders Insider on the trade deadline with Garth Snow and Ted Nolan's comments.

NYI Fan Central Comments:
Again my advice here is to read the article and draw your own conclusions between speculation and the actual quotes but among the highlights:

* The article has the gm's comments that a Ryan Smyth type of move won't happen this year because he wants to keep his first round pick and in general, the top prospects who remain in the organization are ones he declined to part with last year.

* The Isles gm talked about the value of cap space and that if other teams want that space you better give a good asset for it and of the long term plan to win the Stanley Cup.

* He made it clear he will not mortgage the future to try to get a quick fix.

* Asked about the progress of negotiations with his pending free agents:
We've made offers. That's as far as I'll go.

* Satan has a no trade clause and Dallas as been in the rumors but has built a home here. The gm declined comments on possible offers he has received.

* Ted Nolan supports his gm and feels he has to build this team and make the best decisions not only for the short term, but for the long-term success of the team. You can bring a young kid in who can do equally as well as a veteran can when the subject of trading someone to create a spot for Tambellini came up.

* The Islander coach also feels his job is to make sure we get these guys focused on trying to win right now and that they will try to win with who they have.

* Miroslav Satan admitted that his no trade clause and being unrestricted with the deadline has served as a powerful motivating force but talked about how well the club has played.

* Blake Comeau talked about the hit by San Jose's Douglas Murray.

* Mr Logan speculated about Brad Richard and Bryan McCabe but felt it would take the Leafs first rounder to be included for the Isles to make such a trade with Toronto.

* A team meeting in Minnesota accounts for the improved defensive play.

Newsday: Greg Logan's second article is on the fans reaction to Chris Simon's return with his comments.
